Some time ago I asked whether any subscriber had looked at the Chancery
records at the Public Record Office for cases in which a Caddy appeared in
the index. No-one said that he had, so I inspected three rolls of
pleadings today, amongst searches of the national farm survey, the first
world war medal roll index and the burnt records.
In each of the three cases, only the Answer survives, none is inspiring
from the genealogical point of view and the addresses of the parties are
not given. However, in case the information should interest anyone (and to
save readers from fruitless searching of the same pleadings), here are some
brief details:
Elizabeth Crabb, widow, v. Mary Caddy, widow 1708 - C/206/6
Defendant was daughter of Elizabeth Blewett, widow deceased, sister of
William Jarsey, believed to have lived for many years up to 1684 at Madras,
East Indies with considerable personal estate. Dispute related to his and
Mary Glynne's wills. His sisters were Mary Glynne, Elizabeth Crabb's
mother and Martha Carter.
Thomas and Ann (wife) Caddy v. Dame Jane Jackson, widow of Sir Philip
Jackson 11th Nov 1730 - C 11/1867/3
Defendant executrix of husband's will; he was trustee of will of Sir John
Hoskyns, Bt.
John Candwell v. Edward Caddy and Richard Webb 4th May 1702 - C 9/318/38
Dispute over bill of exchange for £25 10s. drawn by Richard Lander on John
Candwell in favour of Thomas Bramley, accepted by Complainant, endorsed to
Thomas Ricketts then to Edward Caddy, then to Richard Webb. Caddy did not
know Bramley, Candwell or Lander.
So now you know. Or not, as the case may be.
I mentioned the medal roll index. I have extracted the Caddy (spelled thus
only so far) entries up to John James Caddy. If you want details of any of
these entries, let me know.
