Hi folks,
Just in case anyone should happen to stumble over a spare Charlie
anywhere:
Charles Thomas Edward CADDY, b 12 January 1901, Warrnambool, Australia
went missing in 1920/1. According to a letter written by his father
in 1942, he left Gisborne, New Zealand aboard a steamer, destination
unknown.
Charles was eldest son of Walter Orwell Critchel CADDY (b. 17
September 1872, Colchester, England), and Alice Charlotte (nee
MUNSOR). Walter Orwell Critchel CADDY was son of Edward Barnett CADDY
b.1841 Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, baptised 13 March 1844,
Piddlehinton.
Walter Orwell Critchel CADDY was, by the way, my gt grandfather. If
his Colchester birth confuses anyone...all his siblings were born in
New Zealand...his family returned to England from NZ, around 1872
returning to New Zealand in 1879. Edward Barnett CADDY (Walters
father) worked for the army in Colchester as assistant paymaster.
Seems he returned to NZ (as a half pay officer) when the army pay
system changed in 1879 or thereabouts.
