Mary Ann Caddy was born in Broadwindsor, Dorset in 1856, the daughter
of Thomas Caddy and Kezia née Hawker. Her paternal line has been
traced to John Caddy of Burstock early in the eighteenth century. At
the 1861 census she was at Hursey Gate House, Burstock and in 1871 she
worked as a flax spinner and lived in Chapel Street, Broadwindsor. On
the 24th February 1878 she gave birth to Eva Bessie Caddy at
Broadwindsor, giving her occupation to the registrar as a domestic
servant and signing the register, while the baptism register describes
her about three weeks later as a factory operative. At the 1881 census
she was described as a sail cloth factory hand living in Chapel 0Street.
Mary Caddy was born in Broadwindsor in 1858, the daughter of Thomas
Caddy and Sarah née Comer. Her paternal line has been traced to Robert
Caddey, said to have been born in 1778 and his son Benjamin, baptised
at Broadwindsor on the 17th February 1805. She was baptised at
Broadwindsor on the 1st August 1858, living at Netherhay. She appears
in the 1861 census living at Drimpton, in 1871 at Netherhay and in 1881
as a flax mill operative living in Netherhay Lane.
On the 28th September 1882 one of them gave birth to James Arthur Caddy
at Broadwindsor. There is no contemporary record of his baptism, but
at his reception at Broadwindsor on the 14th June 1891 20he was said to
have been privately baptised after his birth on the 27th September
1882, and his mother's occupation was given as mill operative. At the
1891 census he was living with his mother at West Street, Broadwindsor,
and she was employed as a sail cloth factory hand. I am not sure where
James' mother was in 1901, but he was an under-gardener living at The
Lodge, Seaborough Court.
The other Mary married Henry Single at Netherhay Wesleyan Chapel on the
16th December 1884, both then living at Drimpton. She made her mark in
the register. One of the witnesses was Bessie Caddy, but there were
candidates with this name in both families. At the 1891 census the
Singles were living at Dairy no. 654, Wayford and in 1901 also in
Wayford, and in both censuses Mary's birthplace was given as Drimpton.
