Hi Sue,
Sorry for delay, scorching sunshine here in Ireland, a rare happening, had to be in it!!
On looking through my notes, I did come across a Luke Heery who was sponsor with an Anne
Gibney in Oldcastle for a baby Luke Cadden born 14/Oct/1850. The parents of the child were
James Cadden and Elenor Friary and I came across it following an earlier thread from Ed
Murray of Newark, N.J. and Mike Groome of Newark, N.J. USA. I also found a marriage on
06/July/1850 in Oldcastle for James Cadden and Ellen Friary with sponsors Catherine
Galligan and Judith Gafney. It confused me in the end as this couple seemed to have
emigrated to New Jersey straight after their marriage and started their family in 1852 but
there was never any mention of a Luke Cadden. Couples often did leave a child behind if it
was felt that they were too weak to travel and they were then reared by family members and
the next time a family member or neighbour was going out they would bring the child with
them. It is also possible that these are 2 different couples. As your great grandfather
would only have !
been 9 yrs old in 1850, it's possible that his father James could have had a brother
called Luke. Heery is not very common around the Oldcastle area but more common in Co.
Cavan.
I went into the Irish Family History Foundation website (
www.brsgenealogy.com) for Co.
WestMeath and found your great grand father Luke Heery for MountNugent with a father
called James. I also found a John Heary b. 1857 and Thomas Heary b. 1855 with fathers
names James in MountNugent. Actually MountNugent is in Co. Cavan but it seems to be under
the WestMeath list on the site, perhaps something to do with the Roman Catholic Diocese at
the time. You have very good info, do you know why the children were born in Mount Nugent
and not Tubride?
I have checked the 1854 Griffiths Evaluation for Tubride, Co. Meath and there are no
Heary's showing as owning their own land or houses, but if you check Co. Cavan you
will see William Heary comes up a lot so it's possible he was the father of James
Heary.
There is a Cadden shop in Oldcastle which I know the history of as it comes down through
our tree. My husband's great great grand father Bryan (known as Bernard)Cadden bought
the shop sometime in the late 1800's and it was 2 shops beside one another. In the
1901 census Mathew Cadden was the baker there and his brother John Cadden was the Shop
Owner (grandsons of Bernard Cadden). I can't see a connection to your great great
grand mother Mary Cadden so I'm wondering where did you hear about the shop? Do you
have a year of birth for her as there were loads of Mary Caddens? In the Cadden family
plot there is a Luke Cadden who married Annie Carroll and they had children, one of them
was also a Luke Cadden b. 1818. Their youngest and only girl was Mary Cadden born in 1831
so this is not your family as the dates don't match.
That's all I can really help with Sue. If you get any further info, pls let me know.
Bye for now, from sunny Co. Meath!! Julie Coyle
