Regarding Rhoda Doughty Caddell and Andrew Caddell religion listed as
Catholic: I rec'd the following message concerning religion of early
settlers. Maybe the clue I thought I found wasn't a clue. Sorry if I
mislead anyone but I had never encountered a "requirement" for religion before.
Earlene,
...To own land in Mexican Texas, you had to become a Mexican citizen. One
of the prerequisits is that you had to be a member of the Catholic church
and attend same. Many of the early "American" settlers such as Austin and
Houston had to do this in order to purchase land. In fact, if I remember
correctly, part of the push for independance had nothing to do with liberty,
but instead was against the Mexican government for their taxation or other
problems for the "American" landowners in Texas.
