Hello - My name is Kim and I am researching my maternal CORDELL/CAUDLE/CAUDILL line of
Whitley Co., KY, Franklin and Habersham Counties, GA, and the old 96th District of SC. My
lineage is through Charlotte CORDELL SMITH > d/o Stephen CORDELL/CAUDLE > s/o Jesse
CAUDLE. Does anyone out there have any further information, comments or corrections to
information below I have gathered on one Jesse CAUDLE/CAUDILL b.1770-1773 in possibly
Lunenburg, VA or on the "Congarees" or Pendleton area of the 96th District in
SC? I have found his parentage listed for the most part as James CAUDILL Jr. and
Mary ADAMS of N.C., who are known to have come to the 96th District of South Carolina
following the opening of Cherokee lands shortly after the Revolutionary War. I have seen
one marriage date for this couple, 9 Feb 1785, which makes Jesse's 1770 birth a
conflict. Other researchers have his parents listed son of James CAUDILL, Sr. of NC and
Mary Yarbrough, m.1749. Jesse may have!
come to
SC in the company of brothers or uncles, as he does not seem to be listed Head of
Household in any of the region Census data. Jesse marries Susan or Susie CRAIN
(b.approx1774) 1793-1794 in the Pendleton, 96th District, SC. I believe this Susie CRAIN
may have been Chickamauga - Cherokee Indian, although this remains unproven. Through the
IGI, I find one listing of Susie and Jesse's family, five or six unnamed daughters,
and three sons: Stephen b. 1799, Benjamin b. 1804, and John b. 1811, possibly data gleaned
from a census, but unfortunately no other documentation provided. Several of Jesse
CAUDLE's children show birth in Franklin County, GA as early as 1806. In 1827, a
"Jessey" CAUDLE, resident of Franklin Co., GA is found listed as a ticket-holder
in the company of "Captain Caudell's District" in one of the GA Land
Lotteries. Other CAUDELL names listed are: "David Caudell, David Caudell, RS
(Revolutionary Soldier), James Caudell, Stephen Caudell, Jr., Benjamin Ca!
udell,
and Malinda Caudell - illegitimate" - almost all receive land in Lee and Muscogee
Counties, however I did not find any of their names listed in the 1830 census of these
counties. Some of Jesse's children's birthplaces pop up as Habersham County,
GA (next to Franklin) - there is a Benjamin Caudell, Benjamin Caudell, Revolutionary
Soldier, and an Ishom Caudell, all residents of Habersham, with tickets in the 1827
Lottery, but I cannot make out if any of these are brothers or ? to Jesse.
Jesse's sons, Stephen and John, marry in Franklin Co., GA and begin to raise families,
however move on to Whitley Co., KY and Scott Co., TN where they remain for the rest of
their lives. I have not been able to find anything further on Jesse or Susie and hope to
at least discover some death/burial data. Thank you for reading this. Given the variant
name spellings, researching CADDELL/CAUDLE/CAUDILL and so on has become an education in
itself! Kim
