Earlene,
I am saddened that Loss Polk CADDEL has died. I met him back in the
1960s when I visited with the family. I was in the Army at Ft Sam
Houston, TX (San Antonio) and went to Uvalde, TX one weekend. I stayed
with Ethel and Pearl CADDEL, sisters of Loss, both never married. While
there they called all the family together for sort of a mini reunion, so
I met many of the family. Much of the research on their family and
descendent of Captain Andrew CADDEL was due to the diligence and love
for the CADDEL family name by these two sisters.
I would very much like to get a copy of his "obit" to add to his family
info.
Here's what I have:
The family of John Sparks CADDEL (Loss' parents etc) can be found at
"http://geneagraphx.com/lost_leaves/lost.htm" labeled "Caddell
Family".
(If anyone would like the photo that's posted, they will "sell" it to
you for $5 I think. I already have an original of the picture.

JOHN SPARKS CADDEL, son of Andrew Bell and Susan (Sparks) CADDEL, was
born (9 Jul 1848) on the CADDEL farm between New Salem, TX and
Henderson, TX in Rusk County where he was raised. He married in Bell
County, TX and later lived in Coryell County, TX where his first wife
died. He remarried there and later lived in Kerr County, Bandera County
and finally in Uvalde County. In 1880 while living in Bell County, he
worked as a butcher. At an early age John Sparks CADDEL began his long
and active career as a rancher and stockman, operating first in Bandera
County and, for the last 36 years of his life, in Uvalde County near Con
Can, TX.
Descendants and friends of John Sparks hold a annual reunion at the
campgrounds near Shut-In Hollow at Concan to keep the family lineage
available to interested relatives and friends. For years and years
friends, relatives and neighbors came from near and far to attend the
CADDEL reunion.
John Sparks lived simply, delighting in the occupation which kept him
close to nature, working with his stock and on his farm, which was
located in the mountains of the "Hill Country" in southwest Texas.
Although he had experienced the hardships of pioneer days, he adapted
himself readily to modern innovations and provided his large family with
the comforts of life. He and his wife, Nancy Leona, were thrifty and
industrious, vitally interested in their children's welfare and future.
They derived a great deal of pleasure from gathering their children
around the fireside and molding them into honest upright citizens.
The spirit of helpfulness which John Sparks manifested throughout his
life extended beyond the confines of the family circle and made for him
many friends over a wide area of Texas. It was his custom to invite his
friends to join him, together with his family and relatives in the
celebration of his birthday. This celebration, which took the form of
an annual picnic held in a beautiful grove on the Frio River, ceased
only at his death.
In early life, John Sparks belonged to the Missionary Baptist Church,
but later affiliated with the Primitive Baptist Church. He was a good
singer, and in his younger days often served as deacon of his Church.
His second wife, Nancy Leona Kendrick, was the daughter of William and
Laura (Cox) Kendrick. They reared 17 children, including his niece,
Willie Padgett CADDEL Scott, daughter of his brother, Robert Lee CADDEL.
Upon his death in an expression of sentiment of the whole community in
the mourning of his passing the Uvalde (Texas) Leader - News published
the following:
"John S. CADDEL was a kind, affectionate father and husband, a peace
loving Christian man, an asset to his community and county. He won and
held the esteem and friendship of numerous friends because he was worthy
of that friendship.
He believed in the Gospel of helpfulness and being the good neighbor.
He spoke no ill of others. He held malice for none, but charity for
all.
After such a life, filled with so much that is good, extending far
beyond the bounds of man's allotted years, we feel grateful that he has
been spared to his loved ones and friends; and although he has passed
beyond the bar, his memory will be treasured and his influence will
continue to abide in the hearts of those who knew him. A prince once
said of a King struck down, 'Taller he seems in death,' and the word
holds good, for now, as then, it is after death that we measure men."
