There have been a lot of spelling variations of the Caddell surname over the
generations. For example, there was a large Caddell family in Hants County,
Nova Scotia. In the 1871 Canadian census, some of the members of this family
had their surname spelled "Cadale". In the 1881 Canadian census, other
family members had their name spelled "Keddle". It's always possible that
the census takers of the day simply spelled the names phonetically. It's
useful to keep these variations in mind as one searches for historical
Caddell records.

Since I posted this information I have had a lot of information updated. I
go back to Hutchinson's father Robert and it appears this line of
Caddell's had been in Ireland for a few generations further than I have
traced and that the spelling had changed as I have found records in
Ireland of family that was spelled Caddle and they lived and worked at
Drumcree as weavers in the Linen factory.
