Some of you might be interested to take a look at the website linked below:
http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/
This is the result of some work donw by academics at University College
London and features maps showing the distribution of the Caddell surname in
Great Britain (not Northern Ireland) in the 1881 and 1998 censuses. It
might be that there is some inaccuarcy as the text describes the name as
being of English origin rather tnan Scottish, something which is belied by
the distribution map.
There is other information including some information on occurrences in
other countries, apparently South Carolina is the US state with the highest
density.
In the GB data you'll see that there were 80 occurrences of then name
recorded in 1881 (3 per million), rising in both absolute and percentage
terms in the following century to 222 (6 per million), and that 91% of names
are considered to have a higher social standing! Not sure how that is
caluclated but anyhow I think I will publicise the six in a million fact
instead!
Regards
Andy
