Nanci,
I don't think this was just a Scottish pattern. I have seen it used
enough to use it as one of my first procedures when I'm trying to
determine given names of the preceding generation.

Hello everyone,
As I read today's postings, I was wondering if many of you knew about the
Scottish naming patterns. A cousin of mine passed this my way some time
ago. I am stuck with my Cadell family and think perhaps if I were to apply
some of these "rules" the Scots used, perhaps I might find some clues to my
Cadells. So here it is and good to all in your search,
SCOTTISH NAMING PATTERNS
1st Son Named for Paternal Grandfather
2nd Son Named for Maternal Grandfather
3rd Son Named for Father
4th Son Named for Father's Oldest Brother
5th Son Named for Mother's Oldest Brother
1st Daughter Named for Maternal Grandmother
2nd Daughter Named for Paternal Grandmother
3rd Daughter Named for Mother
4th Daughter Named for Mother's Oldest Sister
5th Daughter Named for Father's Oldest Sister
