Ann Renfro Shelley
Ann Renfro Shelley, 81, Elm Street, Williamsburg, passed away Wednesday
morning, March 1, 2000 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by a son, Mr. Thomas L. "Tom" Shelley, of Elm Street,
Williamsburg; two granddaughters, Susana Lorene Shelley of Williamsburg, and
Jennifer Lynn Shelley of Williamsburg; one grandson, John Thomas Shelley of
Williamsburg; two brothers, Dr. John Renfro and wife, Bernice of
Williamsburg, and Dr. Norman Renfro and wife, Kitty Lee of Corpus Christi,
Texas; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Shelley began her career at Cumberland College in Williamsburg in
September 1955, retired August 31, 1985. Mrs. Shelley earned the following
academic degrees: A.A. at Cumberland Junior College; A.B. at Union College;
M.A. at George Peabody College and she also earned 30 hours beyond her
highest degree.
Mrs. Shelley had over 41 years teaching experience; 30 years in college
level including University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, Pikeville
College, Pikeville, Cumberland College, Williamsburg, and 11 years in
Williamsburg City School.
Mrs. Shelley was President of Kentucky Association of Student Teaching;
Vice President of Delta Kapp Gamma; Advisor for CC SNEA and Member of Kate
Board.
Mrs. Shelley belonged to the National Education Association; Kentucky
Education Association; National Association of Teacher Education; Kentucky
Association of Teacher Education; Kentucky Association for Children under
Six; The Delta Kappa Gamma; PHi Delta Kappa; Active Member of Lambra Chapter
Society International serving on a number of committees and holding offices
in the Williamsburg Woman's Club and Cumberland College Woman's Club.
Mrs. Shelley wrote several articles for publication for Renfro
Revelations while it was published by the family business. She wrote and
published the book entitled the Big House which was the family tree of the
Renfro Family. She also researched and wrote the history of the local
Williamsburg United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Shelley received the following honors: SGA Honored Faculty in
1972; The Lamp, dedication for her work with Student Teachers in 1970, and
SNEA Honored Teacher of the Year in 1975.
She also received the Business of Professional Woman's Club; Woman of
the Year-Day: United Methodist Church Service Recognition Award; Daughters
of American Revolution Service Recognition.
She belonged to the following: National Honor Societies, Delta Kappa
Gamma, PHi Delta Kappa, and National DAR Society-Local William Whitley
Chapter.
Mrs. Shelley was listed in Who's Who of American Woman 1974-1975;
Teacher in Education-4th Edition; Outstanding Educators of America-1971;
Personalities of the South-1971, and Who's Who Among Colleges and
Universities-1941.
Mrs. Shelley organized and sponsored the Student NEA for 30 years;
State Executive Board of SNEA; Former President of Kentucky Association for
Teacher Educators. Served on KATE Executive Council Association; Served as
Secretary of Cumberland College (CC) Alumni; Present Member of CC Homecoming
Committee; Served on various CC Committees, Teacher Education, Faculty
Evaluation, Honors Day, Standards Committee for Accreditation Program
Director of William Whitley Chapter DAR, Project Chairman (DAR) Liberty Love
Day. Served on Kentucky Public School Evaluation Team 3 times. A Member of
Local PTA for over 30 years, Speaker and Consultant for inservice training
sessions, conferences and workshops in Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio.
In her teaching career at Cumberland College, she taught over 7,200 students
to become teachers, many of whom are now local teachers, educators, college
professors, throughout the United States and other foreign countries.
She taught Sunday School at the United Methodist Church in
Williamsburg, served as Chairman of Pastoral Relations Committee for the
United Methodist Church and served as officer and chairman of various
committees for the United Methodist Women of Williamsburg United Methodist
Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4 at the Williamsburg First
United Methodist Church with Rev. Ward Wilson and Rev. Terry Farris
officiating. Burial followed in the Davis Addition of Highland Park
Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, expressions may be made to the First United
Methodist Church Building Fund of Williamsburg.
