William,
I have been searching for more DALBY connections but found none. I agree, that
the Hanover County area (Tidewater Virginia) is the origin of these families
dating back to the 1600s.
According to my family history (lore), my ancestor Andrew CADDEL stowed away (at
age 14) on a ship to America (c1740s, no later than 1744). He was sold
(indentured) to a local planter upon arrival to pay for passage. Due to
extremely limited travel abilities during the 1740s, I must assume that Andrew
completed his indenture service in the area. Migration studies indicate that
many settlers of that time period rarely traveled more than 20 miles during
their lifetime. I first find record of him in 1751 Spotsylvania (witnessed
deed) after his indentured service. According to history, the settlers migrated
from the Tidewater Counties of VA to the "Frontier" of North Carolina when it
was opened for settlement c1752.
TIDEWATER VIRGINIA was the area of Virginia north of the James River and east of
the Fall Line, represented by the counties of Caroline, Charles City, Elizabeth
City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King George, King &
Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland,
Richmond, Warwick, Westmoreland and York. That's where I am now searching. The
settlers followed the old Occaneechee Indian Trading Path which started at the
Bermuda Hundred on the James River in Virginia and passed through what became
Hillsboro, Orange Co., NC.
Andrew CADDEL was first found in 1754 Orange Co., NC where he and Major LEA
worked with surveyor William Churton surveying land for John LEA, uncle of Major
LEA.
Andrew CADDEL was most closely associated with the LEA family. Other allied
families were ANDERSON, BELL, BURWELL, CARTER, COCHRAN, GREEN, HUDDLESTON, JAY,
JOHNS, LAND, LEWIS, MATHEWS, McNEILL(McNEAL), SARGENT, SCOOGINS, STANFIELD,
TAPLEY, TAYLOR, THOMAS, TYUS, VANHOOK, WILLIAMSON and WOMACK. Andrew CADDEL
married (c1765) a Jean HENDERSON.
