Anita,
In reading your submission I noted "Family tradition is that Martha Ann
was 'raised' by a HALL
family.". I have the following known HALL-CADDEL marriage.
II.6.3. ELIZABETH CADDEL. :d. Unknown
m. 15 Nov 1821, St Clair CO., AL
Elijah Hall :b.ca 1795, place unknown
I don't have any other information on this family.
If Martha Ann CADDEL was a dau of John Calvin CADDEL, she probably would
have stayed at or near his family. However, John Calvin CADDEL lived
most of his middle and latter adult life in St Clair Co. and lastly
Cherokee Co., AL where he died in ca 1865.
Her being "raised" by HALL might indicate she was an orphan, the usual
case when a parent dies. If she was, then that would rule out John
Calvin or Andrew Henderson of being her father, as they both were in the
area the rest of their lives. The only other males that could be her
father would be William or Benjamin. Both of them died during the 1830s
at around 40 years of age or so and had orphaned children.
Family of John Calvin CADDEL:

was living with them.

13. Benjamin :b. ca 1792, Person Co., NC
The last two: William Riley CADDEL and Benjamin CADDEL, died during the
1830s in St Clair County, leaving minor children. William Riley was my
ggg grandfather. I have documentation that William was father to my gg
grandfather Andrew Jackson CADDEL. However, I have never found anything
on the descendants of Benjamin CADDEL. AND, it has never been proven
that he was a child of Andrew and Jean CADDEL. BUT, there was no other
CADDEL in the area that could have been his father. That's another
story. I will not go into that in this email.

The record that identified my gg grandfather as Andrew, son of William:
"A record written in 1888 by Old Uncle Lewis Caddel copied from an older
record he had at the time and included the following text: My
Grandfather came across the ocean...to North Carolina at the age of 14
years. He was sold by Captain on ship to pay for his pass way over to
the New World. He worked his time out which was 7 years for his new
master and then married in...Carolina. He raised three sons - John,
Andrew and William....' The letter also stated that Old uncle Lewis was
Lewis Green Caddel (son of Andrew Henderson Caddel and grandson of
Andrew Caddel the emigrant). Lewis was born 7 Sep 1824, McMinn County,
TN and died 30 Mar 1905, being 80 years of age. Lewis had four brothers
- John (Jackson), Andrew, Thomas, Lewis and Bazzie. They had an uncle
John (John Calvin Caddel) and Billy (William Riley Caddel). John had a
son Andrew (Andrew Caddel :b. 21 Oct 1795, who went to Texas in 1834).
Billy had a son Andrew (Andrew Jackson Caddel :b. 5 Nov 1817) and there
one borned after uncle Billy died (Thomas Andrew Caddel), his name
unknown. Andrew (son of Billy) moved to Ark. And we don't know what
became of him.'" I have a photostat copy of the letter.
Andrew Jackson Caddel, my gg grandfather, did in fact, move to Arkansas
during the 1850s where he received a bounty (Creek Indian War of 1836)
land grant of 320 acres in Columbia County, AR. He later, along with
his three oldest sons, died in the Civil War. After their death, my gg
grandmother, Mary Burchfield CADDELL took her minor children and moved
to Hopins Co., TX (east Texas). The children never knew or had contact
with the other family in Alabama. That's why "Old Uncle Lewis" said they
never heard from him again.

II.12. WILLIAM RILEY CADDEL. d. ca 1832, St. Clair Co., AL
m. ca 1815, Pendleton District, SC
Jane Green :b. ca 1790, probably Person Co., NC
Children:
1. Sally :b. ca 1816, Pendleton District, SC
2. Andrew Jackson :b. 5 Nov 1817, Pendleton District, SC
3. Irena :b. ca 1820, St. Clair CO., AL
4. John William :b. ca 1823, St. Clair CO., AL
5. Mary "Polly" :b. ca 1827, St. Clair CO., AL
6. Frances :b. ca 1829, St. Clair CO., AL
7. Adaline :b. Ca 1831, St. Clair CO., AL
8. Thomas Andrew :b. Ca 1832, St. Clair Co., AL
Notes on children:
Sally CADDEL m. 14 Sep 1834, St. Clair Co., AL to Arden Sanders :b. 16
Jan 1810, NC. The 1860 census showed their children: Marion, Narcissa
J., Eliza P. N., Mary Elizabeth, Barnabas, Elbert Lary, Hulda L., John
H., Benjamin, Marion, Calvin and James Arden. Arla Kay Hines
(arlakay(a)hotmail.com) was the gg granddaughter of Elbert Lary SANDERS.
Andrew Jackson CADDEL (my gg grandfather) m. 22 Aug 1837, St. Clair Co.,
AL to Mary Burchfield :b. 23 May 1818, Pendleton Dist., SC :d. 23 Jul
1894, Hopkins Co., TX. His children were: William, Burwell Green,
Elizabeth J., James Wylie, Andrew Peter, Lewis Tyus, Mary Lettisha, Adam
Lafayette (my g grandfather), Nancy Ann, Columbia Warren, Martha Melisha
Adaline. I have a copy of their bible record.
Irena CADDEL m. 18 Apr 1844, St. Clair Co., AL to James Rickels :b. ca
1815, place unknown
John William CADDEL m. twice. His 2nd m. 5 Dec 1849, St. Clair Co., AL
to Jane Battles :b. ca 1829, AL. They were last located in the 1860
census of Franklin Co., AL, where she was listed with her father,
Obadiah BATTLES, John and children were missing.
I have nothing on Polly, Frances or Adaline. Andrew Jackson CADDEL named
his last child - Adaline.
Thomas Andrew CADDEL. He is probably the T. A. CADDEL who was a private
in Capt. E. P. Woodward's Company H, 30th Alabama Regiment, Confederate
Army of the South. He enlisted in March 20, 1862.
It is noted that neither John William of Thomas Andrew were identified
by Lewis Green CADDEL except he said "and there one borned after uncle
Billy died".
+++++++++++++++++++++++
The 1850 census St Clair Co., AL listed on above:
Sally and her husband Ardin SANDERS
(Andrew had moved to Tuscaloosa County on bounty land he received for
fighting in Creek Indian War of 1836.)
Irena and her husband James RICKELS
William that married Jane BATTLES and his children Lucinda and Adam
CADDEL were listed with her father's HH, Obadiah BATTLES.
Then all in HH #287 - Polly 22 (yr old), Frances 21, Adaline 18, Andrew
16, and a James CADDEL 16.
William's HH makeup is rather arbitrary, but it's based on best info
available til now.

II.13. BENJAMIN CADDEL. d. ca 1835, St. Clair Co., AL
m. ca 1815, Pendleton District, SC
Delilia :b. ca 1795, place unknown :d. unknown
Children:
1. male :b. 1816-1820
2. female :b. 1816-1820
3. male :b. 1821-1825 *
4. female :b. 1826-1830 *
5. female :b. 1826-1830 *
6. male :b. 1836-1840 *
* In 1840 census
BENJAMIN CADDEL, thought to be the son of Andrew and Jean (Henderson)
CADDEL, was born (1792) and raised in Person County, NC and Pendleton
District, SC, and married in Pendleton District, SC. He later moved
with the family to St. Clair County, AL by 1820, where he later died
during the 1830s.
Benjamin was only listed in the 1830 census of St. Clair County, AL.
Apparently before 1830 he was residing with another family. His widow,
Delilia was listed in the 1840 census od St Clair County.
Enough for now.

The following is what I had posted to the list back in Feb 2000. Note the
Lewis Martin Armstrong family also has a Lewis Green in the family.
If there are any Caddell researchers on the list who had family come to Pontotoc
Co., MS to either settle or visit as they went on west, I would really
appreciate discussing this with them. As families migrated, they would tend to
stay with family members along their route. This could be a lead for me to find
which Caddell family mine belongs to.
The allied families would also be a big factor in this type of search.
Martha Ann definitely came from AL. Which family did she belong to?

My CADDELL is Martha Ann CADDELL :
Martha Ann b. 22 Feb 1818 AL, m. ca 1834 AL Lewis Martin ARMSTRONG
b. 1818 SC. Family tradition is that Martha Ann was "raised" by a HALL
family. HALL names in the Armstrong bible - Andrew b. 16 Oct 1822,
John b. 10 May 1824, Mary Ann b. 24 Apr 1825, Waman W.
b. 6 Jul 1829, Phebe Jane b. 26 Oct 1831, and Elizabeth B. b. 10 Dec 1835.
Lewis Martin and Martha Ann CADDELL ARMSTRONG moved to Pontotoc Co.
(near New Albany) MS ca 1852-1855. (They were on the 1850 Pontotoc Co., MS
census - ah)
They then moved to Hardeman Co., TN, shortly after the Civil War and that is
where they lived until they died.
The children of Lewis Martin and Martha CADDELL ARMSTRONG:
1) John C. ARMSTRONG b. 6 Aug 1839 AL
m. 1858 Tippah Co., MS Margaret M. WILDMAN b. 1841.
The Wildman family appears to be from Blount Co., AL
2) George Washington ARMSTRONG b. 22 Oct 1841 AL
m. 1866 Tippah Co., MS Loucinda WILDMAN b. 1845 AL
(sister of Margaret)
3) Andrew Jackson ARMSTRONG b. 10 Oct 1843 AL
m. Martha Ann SWINDELL
4) Sarah Ann Elizabeth ARMSTRONG b. 30 Nov 1846 AL
5) Frances Jane ARMSTRONG b. 22 May 1849 AL
6) William Waman ARMSTRONG b. 20 Jul 1842 MS
7) Rufus Madison ARMSTRONG b. 5 Dec 1855 MS
8) Phebe Angeline ARMSTRONG b. 19 Sep 1857 MS
9) Lewis Green ARMSTRONG b. 2 Dec 1859 MS
The family that seems to closest to the one I'm searching for would be
John Calvin CADDELL of St. Clair Co., AL. There are allied families in
the ARMSTRONG family that came from Blount Co., AL to the same
area of MS as the Armstrong families.
Rough outline of children of John Calvin CADDELL and Mary JAY:
1) Andrew CADDELL b. 1795 m. Rhoda DOUGHTY

3) Elizabeth CADDELL b. 1799 m. Elijah HALL ********

11. (Dau) CADDELL b. 1816
12. (Dau) CADDELL b. 1818 ********
*********12. (Dau) CADDELL b. 1818. Could this be my Martha Ann
Caddell? Could she have lived with her sister Elizabeth and Elijah HALL?
Does anyone any material on the Elijah Hall/Elizabeth Caddell family?
