Bill - what a beautiful piece of "genealogy research sleuthing". I hope the
"newbies" out there are learning from this. I know you've put many years of
research time to this Caddell family and the following description is a perfect
example of what it takes to "prove" out one's family line. Patience is more
than
a virtue when it comes to genealogy.
My Caddell family is Martha Ann Caddell, who married Lewis Martin Armstrong in
AL and then moved to Pontotoc Co., MS by 1850. It is believed she is from the
St. Clair Co., AL Caddell family, but I have not been able to make a connection.
Everytime I see the name of Lewis Green connected to this Caddell family I know
there is a connection, but where? Martha Ann Caddell and Lewis Martin Armstrong
named their youngest son Lewis Green Armstrong.

Subject: Research Status
Below I have listed a summary of what I had previously reported to
you.
I recently advised you about the John and Major LEA connection with
Andrew CADDEL of Orange, Caswell and Person Cos., NC and their origin of
Spotsylvania Co., VA.
I also, had listed individuals that was closely associated with Andrew:
James LEA, Lloyd VANHOOK, John ATKINSON, John LEA, John ANDERSON, Robert
DICKINS, Thomas McNEIL, Thomas HENDRICKSON, John DOWELL, Charles TRIM,
Alexander ROSE, Jesse VERMILLION, John DOUGLASS, John WOMACK, James
RANKIN, John CANNADY, H. HARALSON, Henderson TRIM, John COOPER, Burwell
GREEN, Lewis GREEN, William LEA, William BROWN, Henry WILSON, Samuel
Rimmer (Renner), Joseph and Thomas PALMER, Joseph JAY, John SCOGGINS,
James JAY, Henry JOHNS, James PAINE, Lewis WISDOM, Isaac SATTERFIELD,
Joshua HENDRICKSON, John and his son Henry JOHNS, Joseph ALLISON, and
Simeon COCHRAN.
Since that time I have found out that not only the LEAs came with Andrew
from Spotsylvania Co., VA, the following (from close associates of
Andrew listed above) also came from Spotsylvania Co., VA:
Lewis WISDOM, John SCOGGINS, James JAY, and Henry LEWIS.
In the interim, I had researchers check records in Pendleton Dist., SC
and Orange Co., NC. However, no major information was found.
I have scheduled a professional researcher in Virginia to search
(probably in September) records of Spotsylvania County and vicinity
pertaining to Andrew CADDEL. I am now very optimistic that we are
finally zeroing in on Andrew's Origin in America.

Recap: My ancestor Andrew CADDEL b. abt 1730s, SCT married (Orange
Co.,
NC) a Jean HENDERSON, I summarize abt 1765 from ages of children. I
still do not know her parents.
A close associate of Andrew CADDEL was a Major Tilman LEA and his father
John LEA. Major and Andrew surveyed land together in Orange Co., NC from
at least 1754 - 1762 and Andrew was executor of will for his father John
LEA. I have info from a direct descendant of Major LEA who said that
Major was born in Spotsylvania Co., VA and his father John was from ENG.
I found in a land record of Spotsylvania Co., VA where Andrew witnesses
a deed dtd 2 Apr 1751, a land transaction, from John Tyre of Albermarle
County, VA to John Williamson of Spotsylvania County, VA, St George
Parish, Spotsylvania County. Witness: Robert Huddleston, William
Mathews, Andrew CADDEL, Edward Land. County records, volume 1, page 184.
The LEAs moved about that time from Spotsylvania via Granville Co., NC
to Orange Co., NC. Apparently Andrew CADDEL came with them. Andrew,
first located in Orange Co., NC records in 1754 where Andrew and Major
LEA did a survey of his father, John LEA's land on 30 Jan 1754, Orange
County, NC. He was listed as a SCC (Sword Chain Carrier) and worked with
surveyors Major Lea and William Churton.
I also understand that the HENDERSON family from Hanover Co., VA and
Spotsylvania Co., VA were related. Family of both counties moved to the
Granville/Orange/Caswell/Person Cos., NC. In 1752 part of Orange County,
NC was formed from Granville County, NC. Orange Co., NC was divided in
1777 to form Caswell Co., NC and in 1792 into Person Co., NC.
The 1755 tax list of Granville Co., NC listed:
Nathaniel HENDERSON & son Richard (2-0-2) (From Hanover Co., VA.)
Samuel HENDERSON, sons Richard & Nathaniel, (From Hanover Co., VA.)
Thomas BURDON, Negroes Tom, Peter & Lewis (4-3-7) (From Hanover
Co., VA.)
James TRAVILIAN, Richard HENDERSON & Negroe Sam (2-1-3) (From Hanover
Co., VA.)
On 25 Mar 1708, Janet (Jane) Henderson was baptized in New Kent County,
VA, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Wilkerson) Henderson of Hanover
County, VA. Thomas HENDERSON died in 1709. Jane married a Thomas
Travillian of
Hanover Co., VA, and later moved to Pacelot Mill, SC. Several members of
the HENDERSON family also moved there. (This is the same area where
Andrew CADDEL and family moved when they left NC.)
The 1755 tax list of Orange Co., NC listed:
Andrew CADDLE (1-0) * - (CADDEL)
William JAY & son (2-0) - (his son James JAYs daughter Mary married
John CADDEL, son of Andrew CADDEL)
John ANDERSON (4-0) - (James ANDERSON married Margaret, dau of
Andrew CADDEL)
Francis HENDERSON (1-0) - From ?
William HENDERSON (1-0) - From ?
Richard HENDERSON (1-0) - From Hanover Co., VA
Argulus HENDERSON (1-0) - From ?
James LEA (1-0) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
James LEA & servant (2-0) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
William LEA & son with 2 Negroes (2-2) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
William LEA on Cobs Creek w/1 Negro (1-1) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
John LEA with....2 Negroes (1-2) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
William LEA with 1 Negro (1-1) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
Zachariah LEA with 1 Negro (1-1) - From Spotsylvania Co., VA
It is my belief that a member of the HENDERSON family from Hanover Co.,
VA had a daughter named Jean HENDERSON :b. ca 1745 and Andrew CADDEL
married in Orange Co., NC. Andrew CADDEL may have been in Granville Co.,
NC, after leaving Spotsylvania Co., VA prior to Orange Co., NC or it may
have been in the part that became Orange County. I have documentation
that verifies that Andrew married a Jean HENDERSON. I have County
records that identify Jean CADDEL in 1768 and 1788 and documented
statements by Lewis Green CADDEL, grandson of Andrew CADDEL. Andrew and
Jean had sons - John, Andrew and William CADDEL and daughters -
Margaret, Phoeby, Elizabeth, Martha, Jane, and Unisa CADDEL.
