Personally, I recommend Legacy Family Tree (software) as it has an excellent
source writer to guide you through proper documentation. To me, that is the
most critical. You can have a bazillion names in a tree but without
sources, it is worthless.
There is a free version available for Legacy but I think you need to
purchase the program for source writer.......I think I paid about $39 for
the program.
There are also many forms available online for free to guide you as
well....and many other free family tree software programs (Legacy is a
personal preference)
I started out just listing names, places and dates, thinking that even
though I viewed the info and verified same that would be enough. It really
is not, take the time and enter your sources or folks will question the info
later (and if you are like me, will forget where you received the info to
begin with :-).
Because I did not do this to begin with, I am in the process of an entire
tree redo and want to save you that trouble.
