INTRODUCTION: MINNIE CADDELL MILES
Note from Ann CADDELL Crawford: Before I became really interested in the
Caddell family history, in the late sixties, my husband took some courses
taught by Dr. Minnie Caddell Miles. He was working on his Ph.D. at the time.
Later, I realized what a treasure trove of information on our Caddell family
that she would have been. Perhaps I can catch up with her again before it is
too late.
I do not know if she and I are related, but she is from Alabama where the
original Andrew Caddell settled after moving from the Carolinas.
At the same time my husband, Roy, was in school at the University of
Alabama, Johnny Caddell of Decatur, Alabama was their acting President. He
served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Johnny is my first cousin and
lives in Decatur, Alabama. He, too, is now in his 9th decade!
His father, Thomas Arthur Caddell of Decatur, Alabama, was an Auburn graduate
(Alabama Polytechnic Institute) and was a pharmacist upon graduation. He was
the brother of my father, Carl Lamar Caddell, son of Thomas Andrew Henderson
Caddell of Gadsden, Alabama.
I though all of you Caddell "cousins" might enjoy this article I copied today

FRIENDS GATHER TO WISH MINNIE CADDELL MILES HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Tuscaloosa, Alabama - Friends and family from across the country gathered at
the University Club in Tuscaloosa earlier this year to wish the legendary Dr.
Minnie Miles a happy 90th birthday!
A resolution from the University of Alabama was presented to Dr. Miles, which
said in part, "in these ninety years, this soft-spoken, determined and
influential leader, humanitarian and teacher has affected the lives of
decades of University of Alabama students and women regionally, nationally
and internationally. Her perseverance in pursuing her own education allowed
her to break through gender barriers, exert the leadership to make a
difference in the many lives and become one of the University's most generous
supporters." In thanking those helping to celebrate her birthday, Dr. Miles
said, "I appreciate deeply the friends and colleagues who have meant so much
to me through the years. This means more to me than you will ever know."
Dr. Caddell-Miles was born in Glen Allen, Alabama. She received her diploma
in elementary education from Florence State Normal School (now the University
of North Alabama) in 1928. She then went to Texas to earn her bachelor's
degree in 1936 from Mary Hardin-Baylor College in general business, an area
dominated by men. Taking advantage of the opportunity to fill one of the
vacancies left by the men who went overseas during World War II, she received
her master's degree in industrial psychology, in spite of the dean's
admonition that "We don't encourage women to come into our program."
Dr. Caddell-Miles (she goes by Dr. Miles), began her lifetime of service to
and support of the University of Alabama in 1942 as an instructor, moving up
to an associate professor of management before her retirement in 1978, after
which she was named professor emerita of organizational behavior. Her
teaching excellence has been recognized through awards and from students'
testimonials. She received the National Alumni Association's Outstanding
Commitment to Teaching Award in 1977. As the 30th anniversary of Vivian
Malone Jones' having been the first African American to graduate from the
University, Jones credited Dr. Miles for having been a source of support and
inspiration
Dr. Miles' significant financial support of the University began in 1976 when
she established one of the UA's earliest Annuity Trusts, which was to benefit
financial needs in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business
Administration. Other funds she has created or supported include the Minnie
C. Miles Human Resources Management Endowed Graduate Scholarship, the Minnie
Caddell Miles Commerce and Business Professorship, the Minnie C. Miles -
Frank A. Rose Memorial Endowed C&BA Professorship of Leadership, the Minnie
C. Miles Endowed Graduate Scholarship in the Manderson School of Business,
and the Minnie C. Miles Endowed Excellence Award that rewards administrative
excellence.
