Hi Diane,
There may not be a link with your Cadles, but for your information, there
were a lot of Caddells in Hants County, Nova Scotia who were "Master
Mariners" and sailed the world in the mid 1800's to early 1900's. One was my
g-grandfather, John Bartlett Caddell (1841-1886). Another was William Moore
Caddell, (1864-1909). William Caddell owned a ship called "The Fifeshire"
and leased another called "The Concord" from his father-in-law, Capt. Reuben
Fulton. William's wife, Katherine Douglas Fulton, b. 1870, died on board the
"Fifeshire" on 28 Oct 1907 en route from Chile to Queenston, Ireland. She
was buried in Queenston, Ireland. Even their son, Charles Edward Caddell was
born at sea (1899).
Another branch of the Hants County, Nova Scotia Caddells, moved to Brooklyn,
New York in the late 1800's and founded the Caddell Drydock Company on
Staten Island. I have more information on these Caddells if you are
interested.
So the bottom line is, there were lots of Caddells associated with the sea.
By the way, the 1871 census for Nova Scotia has many of the Caddells spelled
"Cadale".
Happy hunting,
George Marshall

Hi list and Peggy,
My greatgrandfather, William Cadle, was a Thames waterman from
Maidenhead, Berkshire, in the late 1800's. Since you are researching
mariners I thought I'd ask for a tip on any places I could find more
information about him. Thanks. Diane in Pennsylvania
