William,
I agree it was new to me, I have previously never found any such
service.
The info on Andrew CADDEL (b. 1795) was given to me by Martin CADDELL of
Birmingham, AL. He found the reference in the Library at
Birmingham..."Horseshoe Bend on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama was the
scene of a decisive battle between the Creek Indians and the forces of
General Andrew Jackson. The Creeks were defeated on March 27, 1814 and
the region was opened for settlement. Among Andrew Jackson's army was a
Corporal Andrew CADDELL." He did not record the name of the book or
other reference.
My gr gr grandfather, Andrew Jackson CADDEL (b. 1817), first cousin to
the above Andrew, is the only other Andrew of the period that I have
ever found in Alabama. He was in the service of Andrew Jackson during
the Creek Indian War of 1836.

Dale & List,
Have you seen the Tuscaloosa County, AL record on John (Calvin) CADDEL?
Tuscaloosa County deed records, dated 21 Nov 1821, showed John CADDEL
registered for land, Section 10, Township 21, Range 11 West.
I have been unable to find John Calvin CADDEL in the 1820 census.
Apparently they were living in Tuscaloosa County. There is not census
record for them.
I have submitterd the following for the Tuscaloosa County Heritage Book:
Early residents of Tuscaloosa County included Andrew CADDEL,
(1795-1869), Person County, NC and raised in Pendleton District, SC, the
son of John Calvin and Mary (Jay) CADDEL. When Alabama became a state
in 1819, the CADDEL clan headed by his grandparents, Andrew and Jean
(Henderson) CADDEL settled in St. Clair County, AL. Tuscaloosa County
deed records, dated 21 Nov 1821, showed John CADDEL (Andrew's father)
registered for land, Section 10, Township 21, Range 11 West. It is
assumed from this that Andrew and his parents moved on to Tuscaloosa
County. However, in the 1830 census Andrew was in Tuscaloosa County and
his parents were in St. Clair County. Family tradition has Andrew
marrying to Rhoda DOUGHTY (1801-1880) in Tuscaloosa County in about
1818. They had the following 11 children: John Calvin (1819-1884),
Jeremiah Doughty (1821-1864), William James (1823-1895), Andrew Bell
(1825-1912), Anthony Bain (1828-?), Joseph Doughty (1831-1940), Thomas
Newton (1834-1856), Robert Joseph (1835-1909), Sarah E. (1838-1862),
Martha Elizabeth (1841-?) and Richard Marion (1843-1884). Andrew's
wife, Rhoda DOUGHTY was the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (unknown)
DOUGHTY. Her parents were buried in Big Creek cemetery in Tuscaloosa
County, AL.
While in South Carolina, Andrew fought in Alabama as a Corporal under
General Andrew Jackson and the defeat of the Creek in the Creek Indian
War of 1813-1814.
Andrew and family left Alabama and settled in Zavala's Colony, Mexican
Municipality (Texas) in April 1834 which became San Augustine County in
1836. Andrew was a private in Captain William Kimbro's San Augustine
Company. After the slaughter of the Texans in the Alamo in March 1836,
Andrew enlisted under General Sam Houston in the fight for Texas
independence from Mexico, where they defeated the Mexican forces in
April 1836 at the Battle of San Jacinto. Andrew's name is etched in the
Bronze rolls on the wall inside the San Jacinto Monument as one of the
heroes of the Battle. In 1936 the State of Texas place a monument on
Andrew's grave on the CADDEL family farm in Bell County, TX, in memorial
of his service.
While in Texas, all of Andrew's nine sons fought for the Confederacy in
various units in the Civil War. Only Jeremiah Doughty CADDEL died as a
result of the Civil War.
Andrew had a sister, Mary, born 1801 in Rutherford County, NC, raised in
Pendleton District, SC, and later lived in St. Clair County, AL and
Tuscaloosa County, AL where she married 5 Feb 1822 Joseph DOUGHTY Jr.
(1799-1875). They moved to Texas with the rest of the family by 1834.
Another resident of Tuscaloosa County was Andrew Jackson CADDEL
(1817-1862), born in Pendleton District, SC, first cousin to the above
Andrew. He likewise moved to St. Clair County, AL with his family
following Alabama statehood, where he married Mary BURCHFIELD in 1837.
Andrew fought in the Creek Indian War of 1836 under General Andrew
Jackson and received a bounty land grant in Tuscaloosa County. About
1846 he and Mary moved to Tuscaloosa County. Mary's parents were James
Wood and Jane (unknown) BURCHFIELD. Jane BURCHFIELD, Mary's mother was
living with the family until she died on February 26, 1858. James Wood
BURCHFIELD was thought to be the son of Adam BURCHFIELD.
Records of the county clerk's office, Tuscaloosa County, showed a bounty
land grant issued to Andrew, dated July 12, 1851, warrant number 10.209
for 40 acres, being actually 39.76 acres, described as the northeast ¼
of the northeast ¼ of section 4, township 20 south, range 12 west,
Huntsville meridian. This land was granted to Andrew for his service in
the Creek Indian War of 1836. Andrew and Mary were listed in the 1850
census of Tuscaloosa, District 2, household number 127. He and Mary had
the following children: William (1838-1839), Burwell Green (1839-1862),
Elizabeth J. (1841-1935), James Wylie (1844-1863), Andrew Peter
(1846-1862), Lewis Tyus (1848-1913), Mary Lettisha (1850-1871), Adam
Lafayette (1853-1924), Nancy Ann (1855-1940), Columbia Warren
(1858-1926), and Martha Melisha Adaline (1862-1943).
Andrew received another bounty land grant in Columbia Co., AR for his
Creek Indian War service. While in AR, In 1862, Andrew and his four
oldest sons entered service for the Confederacy and all died as a result
of the Civil War.
My CADDELL is Martha Ann CADDELL :
Martha Ann b. 22 Feb 1818 AL, m. ca 1834 AL Lewis Martin ARMSTRONG
b. 1818 SC. Family tradition is that Martha Ann was "raised" by a HALL
family. HALL names in the Armstrong bible - Andrew b. 16 Oct 1822,

Lewis Martin and Martha Ann CADDELL ARMSTRONG moved to Pontotoc Co.

shortly after the Civil War and that is where they lived until they died.
The children of Lewis Martin and Martha CADDELL ARMSTRONG:
1) John C. ARMSTRONG b. 6 Aug 1839 AL

The Wildman family appears to be from Blount Co., AL
2) George Washington ARMSTRONG b. 22 Oct 1841 AL

The family that seems to closest to the one I'm searching for would be
John Calvin CADDELL of St. Clair Co., AL. There are allied families in
the ARMSTRONG family that came from Blount Co., AL to the same
area of MS as the Armstrong families.

Donna,
Hi, yes it's a good possibility that there is an Alabama connection with
your John Calvin CADDELL.
Andrew CADDEL from Scotland had 3 sons we know about - John Calvin,
Andrew Henderson and William Riley and maybe a Benjamin. Benjamin did
exist with the others in St. Clair/Cherokee Cos, AL. His family was
listed in the census twice.
Benjamin apparently died ca 1838 leaving wife Delilia and several sons
and daughters per St Clair Co. census' of 1830 and 1840. John Calvin and
William were also documented in NC records.
John Calvin only had one son, Andrew, we know about and a bunch of
daughters, maybe another son, James, but I find no descendants from a
James (he was listed in records only one time).
Andrew Henderson had sons and daughters that had lots of descendants
(all well documented).
William had two sons that I can document - Andrew Jackson and the other
sons name unknown. William apparently died ca 1832 per probate records
leaving several sons and daughters per census records of St Clair Co.
1830 and 1840. Andrew Jackson CADDEL was my gr gr grandfather. I have
him well documented back to birth. He died a prisoner of Civil War in US
Hospital, St. Louis, MO.
That leaves the unknown son of William, James the possible son of John
Calvin and unknown sons of Benjamin. As far as I have been able to
determine, there are several males not accounted for.
Does anyone on the list have any data on John Calvin, William or
Benjamin other than what I mentioned above?
Bill Caddell

Dale,
Have you seen the deed reference for John (Calvin) CADDEL on the
internet or elsewhere:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rutherford County, NC Deed Index
Grantor-Grantee 1779-1917 by W. D. Floyd
John CADDEL to William HARGES - Deed - 22-23/154/1804.
I would assume it was a deed in 1804, but the other number may be pages
and volume.
I have a reference where you can order a certified or uncertified copy
of deeds:
Register of Deeds Office, P. O. Box 551, Rutherford, NC 28139. I do not
know the price.
That is one of the many reference I have in the to-do list. I have not
researched Rutherford other that what I have been able to get off
internet and a few census records. Rutherford needs to be researched.
Rutherford County, NC Census records showed:
1800 - John CADDEL & family
William COGDELL & family
1820 - Reuben CADWELL & family
1830 - Thomas COGDELL & family - page 478
1840 - Thomas CADELL & family
Whit. CADELL & family
Note: CADWELL is an often misspelled form of CADDEL(LL) in records.
COGDELL?
I have always assumed that this John is John Calvin CADDEL. The dates
fit. By 1810 John Calvin was in Pendleton District, SC with the rest of
the family. However, I do not know who the above William, Thomas and
Reuben were.
I have a deed in Blount Co., AL for a Susan CADDEL widow of Reuben
CADDEL. Blount is the County on west side of Etowah and St Clair
Counties.
I have a William CADDELL in 1830 census of McNairy Co., TN. This may be
William brother to John Calvin. The dates on him and family would be
right.
There is lots of confusion yet to sorting out the NC-SC-AL family.
Anyone on the List run across any of these?
Yours,
Bill Caddell

I thought I would add my info to the list. The family that came to
Canada from Daviesdykes, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland was John CALDER
b. 1779 and his wife Margaret MARTIN b.1788 in Carluke. His father was
James CALDER who died 1814 at Daviesdykes and his father was Robert
KEDDAR who died in 1750. His father was Bernard KEDDAR d.c.1710 and his
grandfather was Bernard Keddar who died c.1672.
Does this tie in with anyone else on the list? I know Joy is in this
line but haven't found anyone else yet.

My husband's ancestor is Elnathan Cordell/Cordle, b. about 1790/93 NC, m.
Sarah Jennings of Wilkes Co., NC. They were in Habersham Co., GA from about
1818 to about 1830 and were the parents of at least three children -
Malinda, b. 1816, Nathan M., b. 1825, and William Sanford, b. 1827, all in
GA.
Elnathan and family were on the 1830 Habersham census, but an Elnathan was
also on the Monroe Co., TN, census. It is believed he remarried twice in
Monroe Co. and raised another family.
So, I have two questions that need answers -- was Elnathan a son of Benjamin
Cordell, b. about 1757 Lunenburg Co., VA, and therefore a brother of
Stephen, David, Isham, and Elizabeth Cordell, all in Wilkes Co. and
Habersham and/or Franklin Co., GA. Benjamin died 1835 and his widow and
sons went to Monroe Co. and later to Catoosa Co., GA, and at least David
moved on to Dekalb Co., AL.
Appreciate any help in unraveling this family.

I have written a couple of times looking for some help with one of my
connections. I having trouble with confirming my GGgrandfathers father.
I have some records that show him as the son of Robert Joseph Caddel but
it isn't definite. I would appreciate anything anyone could assist me
with here.
I have over 900 individuals in my tree, and more than half are Caddels.
You can see the entire tree at:

or here is a graphical tree of same information that you can scroll
through if you wish. I think several of you will find yourself here,
since I have received much of my information from many of you.

Hey Gang, we've passed the Century mark....We now have 105 subscribers.
Maybe it's time to have a Roll Call on the List. Many of you have not
introduced yourselves to the other List members. Let everyone know what
you are researching. Maybe they can help or give you clues.
I'll start it out. My ancestors:
Andrew CADDEL :b. ca 1732, Scotland
William CADDEL :b. ca 1789, Caswell Co., NC
Andrew Jackson CADDEL :b. 5 Nov 1817, Pendleton Dist., SC
Adam Lafayette CADDELL :b. 10 Apr 1853, Tuscaloosa Co., AL
Benjamine Franklin CADDELL :b. 23 Jul 1893, Van Zandt Co., TX
Lester Franklin CADDELL :b. 28 May 1918, Johnson Co., TX
Billy Frank Caddell (me) :b. 24 Aug 1938, Lubbock Co., TX
I research only CADELL and all variations in spelling worldwide. I only
research some Allied Families (e.g. GREEN, HENDERSON, ANDERSON, TYUS,
BURCHFIELD, DOUGHTY, BATTLE, HOGG, JAY, LEA) to the extent of finding
out their connection with the CADELL and variations families.
I suspect that Andrew CADDEL (1732) ancestors were either a John CADDELL
or Andrew Caddell listed below. However, I have found no verification
of the Scotland connection. The others below - Andrew CADDELL (Sr)
through Simeon CADDELL were partially verified through Scottish OPR
records.
Simeon Caddell :b. ca 1610, SCT
Andrew Caddell :c. 29 Jun 1638, Edinburgh, SCT
John Caddell :c. 31 Dec 1668, SCT
Andrew Caddell (Sr) :c. 2 Feb 1701, Edinburgh, SCT
Andrew Caddell (Jr) :b. ca 1732, Edinburgh, SCT
