SARAH E. CADDEL, daughter of Andrew and Rhoda (Doughty) CADDEL, was born
(12 Apr 1838) in San Augustine County, TX and raised in Nacogdoches
County, TX, where she married. In 1936 she had a daughter living in
Deffan, Erath County, TX. William was a brother to Sarah who married
Robert Joseph Caddel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A land grant of 160 acres was recorded in Kaufman Co., TX, in 1877.
A Will probated for Abner Acrey who died 15 Apr 1869, listed Sarah
CADDEL (daughter) wife of Robert J. CADDEL and children: Malisa &
Frances CADDEL.
Sarah CADDEL Acrey (b. 12 Apr 1838 d: 20 Nov 1862) buried in CADDEL
family plot near Belton, TX with her mother and father, Andrew and Rhoda
(Doughty) CADDEL and her brother John C. CADDEL.
1870 census, Kaufman Co., TX listed Robert J. and Sarah (wife) and
chilldren: Melissa J. (age 11), Sarah (age 8), Ateri P. (age 3) and
Andrew A. (age 4/12, Feb).
1880 census Kaufman Co., TX listed Robert J. CADDEL & wife Sarah,
children: A.P, A. A., M. I., T. J., R. L., John, Minnie, Melissa.
Robert Joseph & Sarah CADDEL were residents of Kaufman County on 24 Nov
1896 when they sold their land there.
1900 census Henderson Co., TX listed Robert CADDEL & wife Sarah and
children: John C. (b. Apr 1878), Joseph J. * (b. Dec 1882) and Minnie
CADDEL JACKSON (b. Apr 1880) inc her husband Walter Jackson (b, May
1875) and their children Wilburn and Edward. Also in same census was
Thomas J., brother to Robert Joseph CADDEL.
* This would be your Joseph
I checked my numerical birth directory for the name CADDELL & spelling
variation in Texas (all Counties) which I personally recorded from the
computer printouts at the Archives, Austin, TX. I find none registered
as born in Henderson County or any other County in Texas during the
period for a Robert CADDEL or Joseph CADDEL.
1910 census Tillman Co., OK listed Joseph CADDEL and wife Ostra (b.
1885, AL) and children: Pearl (b. 1903 TX) Della (b. 1906 TX) ad Willis
(b. 1907 TX).
As of this date that's all the records I have on Robert Joseph CADDEL.
So, all we have is the 1900 census record showing a Joseph J. as a child
of Robert Joseph CADDEL (who would match up with your Joseph Wilburn
CADDEL). Since the census record noted above is a Soundex record the
initial "J" or the date of birth is not totally reliable. The actual
census record needs to be checked and even that may not be reliable.

Bill,
This is a bit of a puzzler and I certainly do not have an immediate
answer. There are no sensible candidates in our branches, as you say.
I do know there are or were NZ Cad(d)ells and seem to remember they came
from Cornwall originally and were not regarded as being of Scottish
descent.
As you quote Parramatta NSW, I will ask my friends and relations out
there to run a check and will let the list know of any developments.
Its good to know our man was indigestible!
Ian
Dear Martha,
We were in Etowah Co. doing research in 1992. That was the year of
First Baptist Church , Hokes Bluff's susquicentennial (150 years)
celebration. I have one of their small books commemerating the event. An
organizational meeting was called and met to organize the First Baptist
Church on March 29,1842. The following excerpt is taken from the original
minutes of the church which was first named Liberty Baptist Church.
"We whose names are hereunto subscribed as Baptists, having fully
considered the necessity of being constituted into a regular organised
church, do petition our beloved brothren Samuel Henderson, William C.
Mynutt, and James Boswell as ordained ministers o the gospel, to look into
our destitution and to organise us into a church if found orthodox."

I have not done a terrible lot of Caddell research, except where they
cross with the Tidmore lines. The main purpose of this query is to
ascertain as to wheather you used a cemetery list or did you accually find
Caddell Cemetery. In 1992 when we were there, I spent a day and a half
looking for it but never came close as far as I know. We did find one
cemetery behind some houses off Hwy. 411, but never were able to ascertain
wheather we were in the right place. This cemetery was very small, probably
not more than about 2 square blooks. It was very over grown with trees and
small brush. I found several capped burial sites but all the stones were
gone or had crumbled so that none were readable. As a matter of fact, I
walked about 1/2 block into the cemetery and strayed from the path I was
following. I almost panicked and was about 1/2 hour finding my way out.
Mary Caddell listed on your Caddell cemetery data is Mary Ann "Polly"
Tidmore Caddell. Mary was the daughter of Henry Tidmore and Nancy Looper.
I have photos of most of the Tidmore/Barnes/ Fitts/ and M.B. Caddell's
stones in the Hokes Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery.
Hear from you soon, Bill Arnold
Bob,

Martha,
I thank you very much for sending the enclosed abstracts and probates
from Etowah County, AL re: several of the family. I had never seen the
actual records but I basically had all the information conntained in
these documents.
I have several comments and additions to the records:
1. "29 Mar 1870: Petition ...of Joseph Barnier?...." This is Joseph
Barnes, husband of Frances E. Tidmore (parents of Thomas F. Barnes that
married Sarah Emma Jane CADDELL, daughter of Thomas Webster White
CADDELL).
2. Albert, John, and James Garner and Susan Asbel were children of Polly
CADDELL, daughter of Andrew Henderson CADDEL and Susan Tidmore.
3. "Hiram Sanders...children of Cassena 'Sassan' Sanders who was wife of
Ruben Sanders...." This is Susan CADDEL, daughter of Andrew Henderson
CADDEL and Susan Tidmore.
4. "...Adam F. Caddell, minor...." This was the son of Thomas Webster
White CADDELL.
5. "...Sarah E. J. Caddell and Laurena E. Caddell, minors...." These
were also children of Thomas Webster White CADDELL.
6. "Nancy C. Leek, wife of J. C. Leek." My records show Nancy married
Jesse Calvin Cheek.
7. "Mary L. Mohon, wife of James Mohon." My records show Mary married
James Alexander Mahon.
8. "T. J. Wofford, gdn of Adam H. M. Caddell, minor" I have no record
of an Adam H. M. Caddell. The closest I have is Adam Francis M. CADDELL,
but I have no knowledge that a daughter of Adam married a Wofford.
However, I do not have any record of marriages for Mary Luther or Effie
Mae Caddell, his first two daughters who both lived to be 61 and 77
respectively.

The following, I think, will help fill in some gaps and possibly correct
some misconceptions
Abstracted in the 1980's at the Etowah Co. Court House in Gadsden, AL
I have refrained from interjecting my ideas of identification or other
explanations. This is an abstract, but does represent what the document

Caddells is Ray Kidd, born and died on July 8, 1935. Burial plot order is
Hesco Caddell, Nancy A. Caddell, Andrew Jackson Caddell (my grandfather),
(Ray Kidd), J.E. Caddell, Orlando Caddell and Una Caddell. I cannot identify
beyond that. Have spoken to Church members and they don't really know.
Thanks
Kay,
I found your msg in my pending file. I thought I had responded to you,
but apparently not. I hope your surgery went ok.
Below is our two correspondence on the HALL-CADDELL. What information
do you have on any of the CADDELL family? especially Elizabeth's family.
Thanks,
Bill Caddell

Bill, sorry to take so long in replying. I'm a list manager and am
having to deal with a flame war raging as we speak!! :) My J. C. HALL
had a brother named Peter who had a son Eligah. I don't know anything
about him, but I feel we should correspond a little more about the
HALLs. I'm going into the hospital for surgery on Monday, so now is not
the best time for me. I should be home next weekend. Would you mind
sending me another message then and let me give it some thought?
Thanks!!

Kay,
I don't think I've ever corresponded with you. I fount your query in a
LIST database archives search.
Did you find out anything about your James C. HALL? The only thing I
have on Elizabeth and Elijah is as follows:
II.6.3. ELIZABETH CADDEL. :d. Unknown
m. 1 Nov 1821, St Clair CO., AL
Elijah Hall :b.ca 1795, place unknown
ELIZABETH CADDEL, daughter of John Calvin and Mary (Jay) CADDEL, was
born (1799) in Rutherford County, NC, raised in Pendleton District, SC,
and moved to St. Clair County, AL by 1820.
I do not have any other info on Alabama HALLs.
Elizabeth had a brother, Andrew, that was in Tuscaloosa Co., AL in 1830
census and moved to Zavalla's Colony, Mexico (Texas) by 1834, joined
Texican Forces against Santa Anna's defeat at Battle of San Jacinto in
1836. Elizabeth also had sister's Mary (m. Joseph Doughty Jr.) and
Phoeby (m. Adam Burchfield) that also moved to Texas. She had another
brother, James, described in a will in Pendleton Dist., SC (not residing
in South Carolina) and may have gone to Texas. However, this is the only
record of James I found. In addition she had seven other sisters. I do
not know if any of the others moved with him. I know that one sister,
Lydia Margaret, that married Joseph Garner stayed in Alabama.

Peter,
I likewise have been trying to find out about the HOGG family of
Haddington. I have misc data received from various descendants. Will
be happy to share. My main interest is those that married into my
family:
Note: date format - YYYYMMDD
WILLIAM CADELL. b. ca 1668, SCT; d. 17280520, SCT
m. 17010713, SCT

2. James :b. 17041102 :c. 17041105 :dsp.
3. John Hay :b. 17060205 :c. 17060209
4. William :b. 17080510 :c. 17080516
Three other children were born and died young
William CADELL arrived in Haddington and soon married Anna, daughter of
James Hog, a Burgess of Haddington and his wife Rebecca Veitch. William
worked as a journeyman glazier and became a freeman on 26 June 1704. He
was later admitted as Burgess for Haddington by right of his
father-in-law, James Hogg. He is buried at the Haddington cemetery.
After he died, a monument was erected in the Haddington Abbey Church as
a memorial to him. According to his monument in St. Mary's Church,
Haddington, William was then 59 years of age.
He was the progenitor for the CADELLs of Banff and Cockenzie.

WILLIAM CADELL (10 May 1708), of Haddington and Cockenzie, SCT and
youngest son of William and Anna (Hogg) Cadell, was born, raised,
probably married and later lived in Haddingtonshire, SCT. He married
Christeen, daughter of John and Marion (Scott) Hog of Prestonpans, SCT.
Marion Scott was the daughter and co-heir of Walter Scott, Bailie of
Aberlady, SCT. William was the 1st Projector of the Carron Iron Works.
John Hog was a shipowner at Prestonpans.
Nothing is known of William's early years, but in 1730 he moved to
Cockenzie, near Prestonpans. He later married Christeen, the daughter
of John Hog a local Shipowner and Sea Captain. This may well have
introduced him to overseas trading which was soon to become a key
element in his business interests.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have in a much older generation:
Andrew Caddell :b. 1590, SCT :d. Before 16620521
m. 16180611, Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, SCT
Jonet Hogg :b. 1595, SCT :d. May 1628
Children:
1. Andrew :c. 16190509, Edinburgh, SCT
2. Johne :c. 16210201, Edinburgh, SCT

5. Agnes :c. 16260129, Edinburgh, SCT
6. Jonet :c. 16260129, Edinburgh, SCT
7. Jonet :c. 16280511, Edinburgh, SCT
------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to family tradition my ancestor, Andrew CADDELL(L) b. ca 1732,
Edinburgh, SCT came to America as a stowaway during the 1740s to
Virginia/Carolinas. It is thought that he may have been previously in
the Augusta Co., VA area. He was in Orange county, NC during 1750s -
1805.
I recently found on the internet, James HOGG, b. 1729 d. 1805, a
Scottish born merchant that also appeared in the same Orange county area
during the 1770s. James was about the same age as my Andrew CADDEL. They
may have been cousins by marriage.
Another HOGG: Peter HOGG's father was James HOGG :b. ca 1680 and was in
Augusta Co., VA.

I was just down at the Kimble County Historical Commission and found a
registered brand for a M. E. Caddell of Kimble County, TX from around 1885
- 1890. The brand is a straight line with an upside down U. I copied the
page of the book. I am not sure whether M. E. is male or female or exactly
who it is. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello All,
I am new both to this group and also to the whole idea of researching
the history of my family name. Until relatively recently I believed
that Caddell was a name of Irish origin as my father and his forebears
as far back as anyone knows come from Co. West Meath in the Republic of
Ireland.
On a recent rtip to Northern Ireland, I was surprised to see when
browsing through the phone book several (6 or 7) Caddells listed. Later
on that week, I was in Dublin and the sme search there turned up only my
Uncle Pat. A little more research showed that Caddell is in fact as
about as rare a surname in the Republic of Ireland as it is in England
(where I now live) or Wales (where I grew up).
Of course all you subscribers to this list will know of the Scottish
origin of the name which exlains the higher concentration in the North
than the South of Ireland. I would however be extremely interested if
anyone out there knows anything about the history of the name in Ireland
(North and South).
Regards
Andy Caddell

Hello fellow researchers,
Was doing a search on the web for the Caudle name, and came upon
the following...
caudle
caudle [KAW-dl] A hot drink once popular in England and Scotland,
especially with the elderly and infirm because of its purported
restorative powers. Caudle was generally a blend of wine or ALE,
GRUEL, eggs, sugar and spices.
from THE FOOD LOVER'S COMPANION, 2nd edition,
by Sharon Tyler Herbst, Barron's Educational Services, Inc.
Soooo, if the brick wall become too thick, we can sit back and
sip our Caudle....and maybe we won't care as much...
Regards,
Hope
Descended through Buckner Caudle's son John
I have in Texas a copy of a Confederate Pension No. 11236, for Lucinda
