Subject: [HODGES-L] Family of Ezekiel Hodges of Hossic New
Many times, in fact altogether too many times, searchers run
into a blank
wall in tracing back. A very notable case is that of EZEKIEL
HODGES, who
has
stumped the best of Genealogists. This line is important
because so many
descendants can prove Revolutionary ancestry from it, but
beyond that it's
enigma. There is a family tradition that two brothers
deserted from the
British army on landing in this country. There is a desertion
record, in
fact a couple of them, but these were from a Colonial
company. There is no
evidence of immediate overseas origin.
EZEKIEL HODGES was born about 1725. His birthplace and
parent- age are
unknown. He married (1st) 31 January, 1750/l, in Stamford,
Connecticut,
Keziah Delavan, who was perhaps daughter of Cornelius and
Deborah (Green)
Delavan. This assumption is based on the fact that Cornelius'
son Timothy
moved to Bedford, Westchester County, New York, wither
Ezekiel moved with
his family in the latter part of 1761 or early in 1762, and
had among his
nine sons a Samuel, a John, a Daniel and a Matthew, names
that appear in
Ezekiel's family, and the two families were otherwise closely
associated.
Between 1763 and 1769 four of Ezekiel and Keziah's children
were baptized
in
the Church of Christ at Salem in Westchester. Just before the
Revolution
the
family moved again, to Hoosie, Renssalaer County, New York,
where he spent
the remainder of his life. The date of the death of his first
wife has not
been found, but he married a second time, for he left a widow,
Margret, when
he died in 1821.
During the campaign of 1756, Ezekiel served with Captian
Hawley's Seventh
Company, at Fort William Henry. The records show that he went
to Albany
without leave, with a Timothy Hodges (presumed to be brother)
on October,
18
of that year. In the campaign of 1761, he was Captian Hait's
Twelfth
Company, enlisting on April, 8th. However the payroll records
show that he
deserted. In the Revolution he served as private in the 14th
Regiment of
the
Albany County Militia.
