Hi-
The first of this Cable line was Kaspar Goebel, who came to the Colonies as a Hessian
soldier, paid by England; he arrived by way of Canada, soon was in the thick of it. He was
captured at the battle of Trenton by Washington, and after seeing that he had been at war
with many men from his own country, accepted an offer by Washington to join the Colonial
Army. He fought at the battle of Cowpens, SC, and the story past that point is murkey as
to what happened next; he probably was fighting in NC at the end of the War, ending up in
Randolph Co., where he met and married a farmer's daughter named Elizabeth Baker. They
moved around some, and as the county lines were redrawn in NC and TN, and as Upper East TN
was then a part of NC, births of their first children were hard to locate as to county,
etc. The story goes that he received a land grant for what was then Carter Co., NC, later
becoming Johnson Co., TN. The family disassembled their wagons and came across the mtns.
near Boo!
ne, NC. They had a large farm and a large family, some twelve children. As the children
married, some ventured away from home, and Peter and Samuel were the first to come to
Cades Cove, hearing of the beauty of the area, good hunting, good soil. Peter eventually
built a mill and stayed on in Cades Cove, but Samuel took his family to Hazel Creek, NC,
which now flows into Fontana Lake. Other family members came to the Cove, for short or
long periods of time, and many are buried in the cemeteries there. Their children married
into the other pioneer families there, of course. Peter was the brother of my
g-g-grandmother, Sarah (Sally) Cable; she married Cornelius Bowman, and they had four
children, George Washington, Pinkney Smith, Elizabeth, and Cornelius, Jr. George
("Wash") was my g-grandfather; he married Martha Osborn of Wilkes Co., NC, and
they had a family of eight children; son Robert L.(Bob) was my grandfather, and his son
Warren was my father. By the way, Elizabet!
h married a Gregg, and they followed the Cables to Cades Cove; her chi
ldren married into the Oliver and Shields families, so I am distantly kin to a lot of
people in the Cades Cove/Blount Co., TN area. Kaspar (Casper)#1 is buried up in Johnson
Co. near the original home area.
