Subject: Cable & Cook Marriage, Snape
A message was on the Suffolk Roots website a few days ago
concerning a Cook
groom and Mary Ann Cable as bride, Snape Parish.
Question: Could this Mary Ann Cable Cook be the same as Mria
[sic] Cook [her
mark] who was a witness to the marriage in Snape Parish 5
December 1847 of
James Caboll [sic] and Emma Butcher, widow? (Cable has all
kinds of variant
spellings, according to the parish records I have read.)
In 1847, James Caboll was characterized as bachelor, labourer
of Snape;
father James Caboll, labourer. Emma Butcher, characterized as
widow of
Snape; father Nathaniel Mills, labourer. Apparently, the
groom James Caball
[sic] the groom signed while Emma Butcher signed with her
mark. The
witnesses were Henry Dale and Mria [sic] Cook who signed with
her mark. They
were "married in the Church of Snape according to the Rites
and Ceremonies of
the Established Church by me Robt. Baker, Vicar."
The writing on the photocopy I have of Baptisms of Saxmundham
for the year
1818 is very faint. It appears that Baptism No. 138 March
[too faint] 1818
is for Mary daughter of James Frances Caball, Saxmundham,
Ratcatcher;
ceremony performed by Wm. Brown [vicar]. [Saxmundham fiche 7]
Baptisms of Saxmundham for the year 1823 is equally faint. In
March (?)
[Baptism No. 284] of James son of James Frances Caball of
Saxmundham,
Ratcatcher ceremony performed by Wm. Brown [Saxmundham Fiche
7].
Both James Caballs, according to documents in the hands of
this writer, are
the ancestors of this writer. James Caball is the alleged
father of Francis
(Frank) Caball, this writer's ancestor. He came to the US and
died when he
was about 50.
If you suspect this is part of your lineage, will exchange
information.
