Re: CABLE Biographies @

I have discovered some discrepancies in this compilation. For now I
will concentrate on the first paragraph, dealing with our immigrant,
Philip Kebelle.
1. His wife Maria's maiden name is usually listed as Brede or Brady.
2. "171 Palatines" ....according to Robert L. Cable's list and notes,
there were 171 (73 men and 98 women & children and 3 dead) on arrival in
Philadelphia. There were 70 Palatines, including Cable. ("Historical
Background of Swiss and German", by Eshelman, 974.8 in York Library)
3. The ship was the "Pennsylvania Merchant". ("PA German Pioneers, Vol.
1" by Strassburger & Hinke)
4. Philip was residing at the time of his death in Warrington Township,
York County.
5. "Buried in God's Acre Cemetery at Ephrata" ... I have visited the
Ephrata Cloister and spent several hours in the museum office, perusing
their files. I have also studied "The Ephrata Commune, An Early
American Counterculture" by E. G. Alderfer.
My main reason for visiting there was to answer the question, how could
a married man, his wife, and children, live in a commune with two
monastic orders, one for men and one for women.
I found that there was a third group, called "Householders". Philip
Cable joined the Ephrata Society because he was attracted to the sect
and the religion it espoused. But, the Householders lived in owned or
rented cottages some two to three miles out from the Cloister. They
attended worship at the Cloister but in completely separate quarters
from the celibate members.
From my reading of the files, I found no evidence that Philip Cable
was
buried in God's Acre. Most sources remark that he died in York County
but no one has found a record of the burial or found the burial place.
Because the Householders were segregated so distinctly from the
celibates, in living quarters and in worship, I find it hard to believe
that any Householder would have been buried in God's Acre.
I have just written the museum office asking for a list of burials in
the Ephrata Cemetery and/or some statement as to the possibility of
non-celibate members of the Society being buried there. I will post
whatever answer I receive.
