Somehow through the good services of the Rootsweb organization, all postings to any
Rootsweb mailing list
containing the word Hessian soldier, come to my mailbox,
which keeps me up to date, gives me new leads, and makes
it possible for me to offer a helping hand.
There was a discussion on your list just these days about
the article the Professor wrote for the Johannes Schwalm
Historical Association about his ancestor, the Hesse-Kassel
soldier Kaspar Goebell, with the title "Caspar Goebell, a Hessian in
Appalachia". This article appeared in the 1984
issue. Caspar was one of the over 900 Hessian prisoners
captured on Dec. 26, 1776 by General Washington's troops
at Trenton, N.J., and was brought to Lancaster, PA.., later
exchanged, he finally deserted at the John's Island, S.C.
in June 1779.
The professor did a remarkable job in researching his
ancestor, and his descendants should take these facts
and incorporate them in their family history.
I am the administrator of the
AMREV-HESSIANS-L(a)rootsweb.com mail list, and I
invite you to search our mail list archives for the many
entries posted by descendants of Caspar and meet some
of your 'cousins' who have discussed their Hessian ancestor.
I am well aware of the fact that there were other immigrants
named Cable, Cabel or Goebel, who came either earlier or
later, but Professor Raymond M. Cable's ancestor is
clearly established.
Good hunting,
John Merz,
researching Hessian soldiers of the AmRev.
