Subject: [PLATT] "Ten Most Wanted"
My "Ten Most Wanted" list has grown to 16! These are dead
ends and
mysteries having to do with the entire Richard1 Platt
(1604-1685) of
Milford, CT family. I've posted this list before, but it
wouldn't hurt
to do it again. I may add to this list as I go along, or
change it; it
is entirely arbitrary. (The order is not important, although
the first
five seem to be of greatest interest to me.) I an inviting
"wanteds"
from the other Platt families to add to the list.
I had added a 17th to this list recently, but it has already
been
solved: Agur Platt (Richard 142-411) and Agur Platt (GIL-2),
"brother"
of Gilbert Platt, have proved to be one and the same person,
and
(Richard 142-411) is correct. The confusion has to do in part
between
Huntington, CT and Huntington, NY. There will be an article
in the
December 2000 Platt Newsletter which will provide a full
explanation.
My list so far:
1. Epenetus B. Platt, b. CT or NY abt. 1777, d. Salisbury,
Herkimer Co.,
NY 22 November 1829, m. Eve ____, b. VT? or NY?, d. Salisbury,
Herkimer
Co., NY 17 August 1844. Need parents and birth info.
2. Capt. Israel5 Platt, bapt. Huntington, NY 30 November 1740
(listed as
Richard of Milford #122-15). His parentage has not been
proved.
3. Sarah Scudder is claimed to be the wife of Jonas3 Platt of
Huntington, NY (Richard of Milford #121) but without
substantiation.
It's possible that she was Sarah Brown, widow of Jonathan
Scudder, but
there is no proof that she married Jonas. Also, did Jonas
have a second
wife, because Sarah would have been in her 50's when his last
child was
born?
4. Thomas Platt of Burlington, NJ, b. abt. 1685-90, d.
Burlington, NJ
bef. 26 July 1742. Is he connected to the Richard family, or
did he
come over from England separately?
5. Zophar Platt, b. CT abt. 1752, d. Bradford Co., PA 20 March
1834, m.
Easton, CT 2 February 1773 Rebecca Fairchild. Need parents
and birth
info.
6. Philo Platt, b. VT 1813. Was he grandson of either Daniel6
(Richard
#121-323) or his brother Jehu6 (#121-327), both of whom went
to
Vermont? Nothing is known so far about the generation in
between except
that, according to the 1790 and 1800 VT censuses, they
existed.
7. Joseph Fordyce Platt, b. 1805, d. Bayshore, NY? 25 August
1869, m.
Brooklyn, NY 21 February 1836 Sarah Ann Ruland, daughter of
Epenetus
Ruland and Almedia Thurber. Need parents and birth info.
8. William Kendrell Platt, b. Bath, Steuben Co., NY 4 April
1835, d.
Blakeville, Victoria, Australia 11 April 1918, son of Elias
Leonard
Platt and Henrietta Jane Hellem. Went to Australia on clipper
Sachsusa
and arrived 10 November 1852. Need Platt family connection.
9. John5 Platt (Richard #111-11), who m. Charity Morehouse, is
not
mentioned in the will of John4, said to be his father. It
would appear
that if he were a son of John4 he would at least rate a
mention that he
had received his portion already. Whose son is he?
10. The wife of John3 Platt (Richard #122). No name is noted
in the
1963 Genealogy, and a note says, The name of his wife nowhere
appears
in the many deeds in which he is a party.
11. William Pitt7 Platt (twin of Peter Mignault7 Platt), b.
Plattsburgh,
NY 28 March 1829, d. Thomas Co., GA 26 January 1901.
According to the
Charles Platt, Jr., 1963 Genealogy he m. 1) Jane McNeil (1
daughter) and
m. 2) Mrs. Mary Hammond (no children). But info from the GA
Archives,
Biographical Questionnaire files, that lists his wife as Mary
J. Platt,
b. Decatur Co., GA 25 July 1846, still living in 1927,
daughter of Jacob
and Mary Butler of Decatur Co., GA. The Thomas County, GA,
Marriage
Index, 1851-1900 says that William P. Platt m. Thomas Co., 27
March
1881, Mollie J. Mitchell.
Clarification is needed here. It is possible that Mary J.
Butler and
Mollie J. Mitchell are the same person (and a 3rd wife), and
Mitchell
was her name from a 1st marriage. (If her birth date was
1846, she
would have been 35 years old in 1881.)
12. Sarah Platt, b. 1766/67, d. 1854, m. John Van Pelt on 28
April 1782
in Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY. Who was she?
13. Who was the Dorothy/Dorothea Platt, b. abt July 1751, d.
Huntington, NY 16 December 1835, who m. 5 January 1774 Jesse
Brush, b.
Huntington, NY 1745?
14. Francis Henry Platt, according to the 1963 Richard Platt
Genealogy
(#FH-1), was b. Redding, CT, 1846. He. d. Thomaston, CT
1915. His
mother was a Treadwell, and he quite probably traces to
Richard1.
Does anyone know his parents?
15. Ezra6 Platt, b. Danbury, CT 1740, d. 1776?, according to
the 1963
Richard Platt Genealogy, is listed in the History of
Lanesboro, Mass. as
a Revolutionary Soldier, contradicting the statement in
Platt Lineage,
1891, that he was a Tory and went to Fort Moultrie, SC, where
he died
in 1776. Does anyone know which side he was on, and where
and when he
died?
16. The 1963 Platt Genealogy assigns Mary, b. abt 1741,
daughter of
Josiah4 Platt of Redding, CT, as wife of Samuel Cable. But
some say
that the correct Mary was daughter, b. 7 January 1736, of
Obadiah4 Platt
of Redding. Which Mary married Samuel Cable?
