I'm looking for any information on Charlotte Cable born around 1829 in Orange (prob
Monroe), New York that married Joseph Gordon b 30 Jun 1827 d 18 Jul 1913 in the Sailors
& Seamens Home in Bath, Steuben co, New York.
Children:
Adelaide 'Adelia' b 1850
Joseph b 1852
Alice b 1854
Elizabeth b 1856
May b 1859
William b 1861
Margaret b 1865
George b 1866
When Adelaide was 1 year old, for the 1850 census, they were living in Monroe, Orange,
NY.
Next door were living Jonathan Cabell (farmer) aged 68, Elizabeth aged 50, Sarah aged 19
and Bridget aged 9.
In the 1855 NY census (also in Monroe) Joseph & Charlotte's neighbors are listed
as John Cable, laborer, aged 69 with wife Elizabeth, aged 68. Both John & Elizabeth
are noted as being born in Orange county, NY.
Other neighbors are Stephen Thompson and wife Elizabeth (Benjamin) who later will have
their daughter, Easter marry Joseph & Charlotte's son, George (my great
grandfather) who was born 5 Apr 1866 in Orange county and died 7 Feb 1944 in Wanaque,
Passaic, New Jersey.
In 1860 the families are still in Monroe, Orange, New York. Joseph & Charlotte now
have the following children: Adelia (12), Joseph (8), Alice (6), Elizabeth (4) and Mary
(2) as well as a George Gordon (34 years old) in their household. Neighbors now are:
John Cable (80), Elizabeth (85), Susan (45), William (10) and Charles (3) in their home.
I don't find a 1870 federal census however there is an 1875 NY census showing that
Joseph and his family are still living in Monroe with their ages listed as: Joseph (49),
Charlotte (46), Alice (20), Mary (16), William (14), Margaret (10) and now George (8 my
GGF) as well as a boarder named William Springsted. Joseph is now a Teamster (Wagoner)
which is what he did during his Civil War service.
In 1880 Joseph & Charlotte are still in Monroe as follows: Joseph (4), Charlotte (2),
Margaret (15), George (13) and May (21).
To complicate this a bit...right next door is the following Gordon family: Joseph (55),
Charlotte (40), Margaret (20) and George (18).
There is also the Dowlan family next to them: William (25), Cornelia (23), Rebecca (2)
and Mary (5 mos) and this may be significant as Joseph Gordon Jr winds up later marrying
Julian Dolan but I am not quite sure who her parents are.
*I now have my late uncle's research and in there he has letters and copies from
various sources, i.e. Elmire Conklin showing Cable Bible records which indicate
Thompson/Benjamin connections as well as Goshen Library copies of the Belcher Genealogy
that lists Whritenhour which lists a Charlotte Cable and Martha Gordon (dau of David
Gordon) marriages.
I don't find any church records to indicate that the later people are direct ancestors
but my uncle believed they were probably related.
It is believed by several people on ancestry that Josph's parents are Joseph (abt
1792-bef 1870 Hastings, Oswego, NY) and Juliann (Dolan) b abt 1800 CT but again with no
clear lineage for Juliann/Julian.
Going back one generation further is another Joseph Gordon whose Rev War Pension shows him
born abt 1753 and died Jun 1843 in Willet, Corland, New York, his grave having been marked
by the DAR. His wife was Ruth ___ wo was born abt 1773 and died abt 1830. From there
online trees have all manner of creative guesswork but none with any proof.
DNA tests show descendency from Sir John 'Jock' (of Scurdargue) Gordon's line
in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I have been trying for years to get the actual placement
right. With guesswork I can connect all the way back to Jock in Scotland but so far
it's only conjecture by following the line to Lesmoir and then to Sheepbridge, county
Down, Ireland, and then to Voluntown, CT. While it 'fits' there is nothing to
prove it so it remains theoretical at this point.
Any help is appreciated. There are many people with these same Gordons listed and I'm
sure they would all appreciate it as well to have accurate information as opposed to just
having copied wrong information from other people's trees.
Here's hoping!
