Charles E. Cable, 72, of 307 South Rutland Street, steward of
the Lincoln
League and one-time Riggs Avenue grocer, died this morning at
8:43 in the
House of the Good Samaritan, where he had been a patient since
late Thursday
evening. Death was caused by heart and kidney ailments.
Mr. Cable had been seriously ill less than three days, having
been stricken
with a heart attack about noon Tuesday. He worked at the
Lincoln League
rooms that day.
The body was removed to the Northam & Fox Funeral home, where
funeral services
will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Dr. Arthur W.
Evans, pastor
of the Emmanuel Congregational church, will officiate. Burial
will be made
in North Watertown cemetery.
Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. F. Kenneth (Ruth) Lewis,
with whom he
resided, and a grandson, Pfc. Robert S. Lewis, on duty in
Germany with
the First U.S. Army.
Mr. Cable was born 12 Oct 1872, in the Town of Pamelia, a son
of the late
Henry and Emogene Reese Cable. For a short time he resided in
Redwood and
Gouverneur, but the greater part of his life was spent in
Watertown.
With his parents he came to Watertown about 60 years ago from
the Town
of Pamelia and he was educated in the local public schools. In
early life
he was a clerk in the George Baker grocery store in upper
Arsenal street
and also in the grocery store of the E. H. Thompson company.
Later, he owned and operated his own grocery store and meat
market at 908
Riggs Avenue, he and his family maintaining residence at 351
Arlington
Street. Disposing of the store about 20 years ago, Mr. Cable
worked in
various other grocery stores and markets.
For a time he was steward for the local Elks club and
subsequently was
a clerk in the St. Lawrence Inn at Gouverneur. Later, he
returned to this
city and for the past few years had been steward for the
Lincoln League.
On 14 Jan 1896, Mr. Cable married Miss Candace S. Green[e] of
LaFargeville,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Collins Green[e] of that village, the
ceremony
being performed at the Green[e] home by Rev. G. W. Baldwin, a
Baptist minister.
She died 9 Dec 1923, in this city.
He was a member of the Lincoln League.
