Hi Anthony,
My Cable/Cabel family are from the Arbirlot, Carmylie area in Angus. Some of the family moved to Aberdeen around 1854. They had a cartage business. In Torry, Aberdeen there is Cabel's Lane named after my grandfather, as this is where they had the stables for their horses.
In 1909 his brother Henry Cabel had a carting contractor & coal merchant business at South Esplanade West, Aberdeen. There also was a William Cabel who had a wholesale fish merchant business at 30 South College St., Aberdeen.
I would like to hear from anyone interested in these names.
There is an Alan Steele in N.Z. who is looking for the same names as you are. If he has not contacted you please get back to me as I have his address.
Regards, Jessie, B.C. Canada.
Names interested in are: Cable/Cabel, Hardie, Gowan, Charles,Chalmers, Sim, Henderson, Gordon, Lamb, Mackie.
Hi, Lura,
The only Cable information I have is the three generations of Henry Cable
(1819-1898), his children and some of his grandchildren, who lived mostly in
Lycoming County, PA.
I just now did a quick FamilySearch.org search for John Cable in CT, and
found a large family of Cables in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT, with a
pedigree going back to the 1640s in Massachusetts, in an ancestral file that
someone submitted. The head of the Fairfield family that I found was George
Cable, b. 1708. Search for any common given name (John, William, George,
etc.) and you will find a few in CT. They seem to be English rather than
German.
I also searched for your Elizabeth Sebring, but found too large a quantity to
read them all. You would need to narrow the search to a particular state and
time, if possible.
Ted
Hello Ted. Thank you for the tips on searching. The first and only state I
have found the Cables (Goebel) was in Dutchess county and Claverack,
Columbia county (Beekman). I have seen the Brothers Valley Cables but don't
make a connection. The information about the CT Cables interests me. Do
you happen to have a William Cable (Cablie) who married an Elizabeth Sebring
on your chart? Lura Folkerts

Or try Casper Goebel, shown on this list: AMREV-HESSIANS-L(a)rootsweb.com
He was a Hessian Grenadier who deserted from the Brittish and changed his
name to CABLE.

Don't know if there's a connection, but I'm hunting an Agnes Cable b 1855 PA (she married a James McDonald) Don't know her parents names but noticed your message and hoped for a connection. Let me know if there's any information about this Agnes Cable. Thanks Molly
Hello Anthony,
Your Cables are the same as Alan Steel in New Zealand which also have a
distant connection to my family. Alan's e-mail address is asteel(a)ihug.co.nz
My wife is also related to Cables from Forfar, but the name was changed to
Cabel. Her name was Jessie Cabel. So far, she has not found a connection to
Alan's Kebel/Cable line, but has not given up hope of finding a commom link.
Jessie's family tree is on our web site, and I have some of the other Forfar
Cables also listed.

I am urgently searching for details of origins of my relative (family, ascendants etc). Her name was (Alice) Mildred cable, (born in Guildford, England in 1878, died 1952), daughter of a draper. Mildred was a dynamic English Missionary and traveller. She was a descendant (like myself) of the Scottish Cables from Forfar, Angus. Mildred Cable wrote over 20 books including "Through the Jade Gate and Central Asia" (1927), "A Desert Journal" (1934 and "The Gobi Desert" (1942). For this last work Mildred received an award from the Royal Central Asian Society. She spent much time travelling in the company of the two famous missionary sisters: Evangeline French (Eva) (1868-1960) and Fransesca French (1871-1960). They became known as "The Trio" and in 1923 they received permission to preach to the nomadic tribes of the Gobi Desert. They learned and spoke the local language..etc...etc.
After the Chinese Revolution of 1939, the three friends returned to the UK and lectured widely in various universities throughout the UK and the Commonwealth.
ANY NEWS, HOWEVER SLIGHT, will be most welcome with many thanks.
Anthony Cable (Cousin - removed - of Mildred Cable)
Dear Lura,
Other than the three generations I know, Henry, his children and some of
his grandchildren, I am clueless about the Cables. The variations in
spelling could lead you on countless rabbit trails to nowhere. I have
encountered at least one Cable family in colonial CT, and lots of CT people
moved west into NY state, so that might be a possibility. But I think those
Cables were probably English Puritans who spelled it that way, not German or
Dutch Goebels. Probably a better source for Goebel might be colonial New
Netherlands or the "Pennsylvania Dutch" German nonconformists like the
Brothers Valley Cables who probably started out with some other spelling.
I had some success with my CT Wildmans by searching on FamilySearch.org for
Wildmans with common names like John and Thomas, which led me to a progenitor
that I could build a descent tree from, and after a year or so and a trip to
CT I found the twig that my gg-grandfather hung from. You might try an
approach like that for Goebel, maybe in PA or NY. Or look for earlier
generations with names that turn up among the Goebels you know. Good luck.
Ted
Hello, Cable researchers!
Henry Cable, my gg-grandfather, died in Muncy, Lycoming County, PA, April 8,
1898. His obituary said he was born "near Gettysburg" February 8, 1819. He
moved to Muncy about 1838 and married Nancy White Quinn about 1840. He became
a carriage maker, selling them in Williamsport and surroundings.
He and Nancy had 6 children, according to his will:
Mary Jane Irvin, who lived in Philadelphia but is buried in Muncy; William
Quinn Cable (b. May 3, 1844). William had 3 children, Jeanett Quinn Cable,
born 28 May 1876, James Gibson Cable, born 3 December 1880, and Clyde Flack
Cable, born 22 January 1882, none of whom appears to have married--they were
still living together in Williamsport into the 1920s. William served with my
great-grandfather, Thomas Ross Hudson, in Battery B, 2nd Pa. Light Artillery
in Grant's 1864 Virginia campaign.,
Margeret (sic) Adelia Hudson Bradley (my great-grandmother, born July 1,
1850;
Rose Miller, who married preacher Asbury Miller, and has living descendants;
John Quinn Cable; and
Harry Cable (1850-1908, per his gravestone). Margeret and Harry appear to
have been twins. Harry had 4 children who died in early childhood, Frank,
James, Anna, and Fannie.
(Sources of information: Henry Cables's will, military pension records of
William Cable and Thomas R. Hudson, Williamsport city directories, Henry's
obit in Muncy Luminary newspaper, "Now and Then" (publication of Muncy
Historical Society).)
I am looking for clues as to Henry Cable's parents. Adams County (Gettysburg)
has no record of any Cables or similar names there around 1819.
I did find census records of Abraham Cable or Coble, Henry Cable or Coble,
and Abraham Jr. living near Waynesboro in Franklin County (not too far west
from Gettysburg) and listed together in the 1820 census, with a male living
with Abraham Jr. in the age bracket that would have contained a 1-year-old
Henry. The name was indexed as Coble, but looked more like Cable. They turn
up again in the 1830 census in Guilford Twp., Franklin County, with a male in
Abraham Jr.'s 11-year-old bracket. The name in the census looks more like
Coble in 1830, however.
A couple of subscribers to this list have mentioned Abraham and Abraham Cable
Jr. of Somerset County. Are these the same as Abraham and Abraham Jr.
Cable/Coble that I found in Franklin County in 1820 and 1830? One of you
said that Abraham Jr. had a large number of children. Was any of them named
Henry and born in 1819?
Ted Hudson
Good evening list.
I have found my ggg -grandfather, Ferdinand White Cable in Erie
County, NY in the 1860 census. He was born about 1793 in Baden (Germany
?) Wife Philpena Boss. Children: Charles, Andrew, Anna, George, William,
all born in NY. There is also another Cable family in the same area.
Henry White Cable.I am thinking this may be another son of
Ferdinand's.Any connections?
Also, I am not a PC wiz and wonder if anyone can tell me if there is a
way to search the Cable name only. I always get the wire & cable, etc.
Regards,
Joan Mecteau
