Hi, to everyone!
I would like to introduce myself to the list. I am Katherine Cabaniss, age
48, and live in rural Virginia. I am about a 2-hour drive from the place
where Henri first landed in this country on the Mary and Ann. This is my
first real attempt at genealogical research. It was a delight to discover
a listserv devoted to the purpose of bringing Cabanis folks together to
discuss their mutual heritage.
I would like to ask if anyone can help me clarify a discrepancy in the
ref., CABANISS THROUGH FOUR GENERATIONS: SOME DESCENDANTS of MATTHEW and
GEORGE by Allen Cabaniss:
On page 14 in the section entitled, The Third Generation, there are the
following entries:
"20 ELIJAH 3 CABANISS (Matthew 2 , Henri 1 )...He named his wife Patsy and
the following children:...
56 Asa; had a son Asa who may have been the father of Boise, James,
Mollie, and Ann."
In an effort to trace which of the 3 sons, Henry, Matthew, or Charles, from
which our particular branch of the family descended, my father told me his
grandfather, John Cabaniss, had 2 aunts, Mollie and Ann--that fits with
this entry in the book. John's father was called Boson. If any of you
are from the South, you know how names are frequently changed to suit the
speaker. I feel confident that Boise and Boson are the same, especially
with the 2 sisters' names matching. My grandfather named one of his sons,
my uncle, James as well.
So far, great matching. We have the lineage
as: Henri>Matthew>Elijah>Asa>Asa>Boise
(Boson)>John>Richard>Buford (my Dad)
On the other hand, on pages 19-20, we have:
"6 ASA 4 CABANISS (Charles 3 , Matthew 2 , Henri 1 )...He named his wife
Sarah and the following children:...
92 Asa B., m. Rebecca Bowers (d. 7 Apr. 1856) on 26 Nov. 1823 and had
(Lunenburg Chancery OB, "B", pp.79f., dated 11 Oct. 1856): Althea Ann,
James S., Mary Rebecca, and Paschal Young. The last named, b. 1837, m. 15
Sept. 1858 Eliza Jane Cumby, Petersburg, Va., and had Asa Baker, S.A.,
Walter T., W.Y., Rebecca, and (twins) James and John."
Here comes the confusion. My father, who has a very sharp memory for
details, says he was always told that Boson married Liza Cumby, and John
had a brother named Asa, for whom my Dad was nicknamed "little Asa". My
Dad says he never heard that his grandfather had a twin.
This would make the lineage: Henry>Matthew>Charles>Asa>Asa>Paschal Young
(Boson?)>John>Richard>Buford
From this entry, I am wondering about the similarities: We have 2 sons of
Matthew, Charles and Elijah, each have a son named, Asa. Each of these
Asas have a son, Asa.
Elijah's Asa's Asa has children named: Boise, James, Mollie, and Ann.
Charles' Asa's Asa has children named: Paschal Young (Boson?), James, Mary
Rebecca (Molly?), Althea Ann
The entries for Elijah match perfectly, but the entries for Charles match
for the marriage to Eliza (Liza) Cumby and John having a brother named, Asa.
Can anyone help with the lineages from Elijah's son, Asa and Charles' son, Asa?
Finally, I was thinking how wonderful it would be to have a family reunion
at Manakin, VA, where Henri started our heritage here in America. I would
love to see the physical similarities among our family members, and hear
about different personality traits. Anyone interested?
Warmest regards,
Dr. Katherine Cabaniss
