Very interesting notes on Henri. When staying in Greece a couple of
years ago, I was told by Greek friends the name Cabanis is not
uncommon there. One middle-aged friend went to school with Greeks
named Cabanis. My brother, who has traveled extensively in Europe,
met locals in Florence, Italy, who stated Cabanis was an old name
there, perhaps back to the Renaissance. I don't have documentation
to verify this, but I suspect we may have originated in Greece,
migrated to Italy, then on to France, before coming to the
U.S. Quite the nomads, which might explain why I like to travel so much ;-)

Patricia
Thanks, I do not read or speak French but I think I can see that Henri
possibly was a merchant(drapes/curtain maker? in France and he and 16
others or more were being persecuted but am really guessing at this
point. I will see if I can find someone who speaks French to better
interpret it for me. Anyway thank you so much for passing this along.
Anything I can do for you here in tuscaloosa, Alabama?

Bonjour,
probablement votre anc?tre :
protestants aid?s
lors de leur passage ? Francfort (travaux de Mme Magdelaine).

My French is very rusty as well however google has an interpretation page it
is great. It only allowed so many words at a time.Basically a lady had sent a
query through camisards.apparently requesting information on a Henri Cabanis
who migrated to the colonies from England.she mentioned that his mothers
maiden name was Soultierre. This French man wrote back that the name Cabanis
is common around the C'evennes and that there were two men with this name
and that he felt that it was the first one who might be her ancestor. The
first mans name was a Henri Cabanis he was a merchant and clothier in
Lausanne and that he was assisted the 20th of March 1686 with 16 exiles
becaluse of perscecution. the second man was a Pierre ,a Merchant fro Berne
and Zurich he was assisted the 8 of September 1686 to Brandbourg .What
surprised me were the date ? and the country they left being Switzerland.
.Of course it is possible that they were exiles from France to Switzerland
,and that they lived there a time before eventually fleeing to London or
where ever ..I was surprised about the date I felt if he were working as
merchant a clothier ,then he must be at least 25 or 30 making him born about
1751 or so .The difficulty I have with this is believing that he had no
children until 1699 then only had three .( at least three sons ) I believe
that this is the Henri Cabanis that arrived in 1699 .I guess that it could
be that he had a son Henry and it is he who arrived in 1699 . we are missing
something from this genealogy .Thank you for your interest Pat Perkins
