When I was in the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne in 2013, I found this book One
Ladd’s Family, including Cousins Near and Distant, Ruth Kline Ladd, 1974, which outlined
on pages 544 1-8, this Boyd family of Bedford County, Virginia.
James Boyd (4) was born in 1738 in Bedford County, Virginia, and in that same county
married Martha Burns, who was also born in Virginia and who was related by birth to the
great bard of Scotland, Robert Burns. There were two daughters and six sons.
They moved to South Carolina where James took an active part in the struggles of the
Colonies to gain their independence. Twice their home was burned to the ground by the
Tories. Three of their sons, John, Samuel and Abraham, fought by his side. In 18775 he
enlisted in the 1st South Carolina Regiment commanded by Col. C. Pinckney, was taken
prisoner and died in a Tory prison in December 1779.
1. John Boyd (5) – He also died in a Tory prison.
2. Samuel Boyd (5) – born 20 May 1763 (see below)
3. Abraham Boyd (5) – He was the youngest son and enlisted at the age of 16.
After the war, he migrated to Tennessee crossing the mountains in company with Andrew
Jackson, and settled at Nashville.
Lynn Boyd (1800-1859) a son of Abraham Boyd, who was a congressman for
This book does not name the other three sons or the two daughters.
The (4) and (5) used hear appears to be generation markers. But these do no appear to be
generation markers for the Boyd family – unfortunately – so we do not know, from this
source, who James Boyd’s parents were or their origins and when they came to the USA.
However, Bedford County, Virginia was not formed until 1753 from Albemarie and Lunenburg
Counties – which are now some distant away from Bedford County, so this does not help us
with which town or area this James was actually born in, in 1738.
From a posting by Ray Isbell in February 2007 to me privately gave
these children for James Boyd and Martha Burns.
Martha BOYD b: 1755
James BOYD b: ABT. 1757
Robert BOYD b: 1759 in Wayne Co., IN
John BOYD b: ABT. 1761
Samuel BOYD b: 20 MAY 1763 in Craven Co., SC
Abraham BOYD b: 1 OCT 1765 in Bedford Co., VA
Mary BOYD b: 1768
Laird BOYD b: 1775
So this provides “all” the names of the eight children of James and Martha Boyd, however I
would question if the son Robert Boyd, born in 1759, was born in Wayne Co., IN. This part
of America was still in French control, so I would question this location.
it proves the following information - HOWEVER, THERE IS NOT PRIMARY SOURCE or PERSON WHO

This Will tells us that William Boyd lived at “Flatt Creek, Virginia”. But I do not know
the present County location of Flatt Creek.
I know that over the years, I have collected about seven, or so, Boyd families from
Bedford, Franklin and Patrick Counties, Virginia, so with the above information, it may
now be possible to links these families to some of people given above.
