From the book One Ladd’s Family, including Cousins Near and Distant,
Ruth Kline Ladd, 1974, it is known that Samuel Boyd, the fifth son of James Boyd and
Martha Burns, was born in Bedford County, Virginia in 1763 and fought in the War of
Independence. While he married Isabella Higgins on 12 December 1785 in Bedford County,
Virginia – who was born in South Carolina on 13 February 1764 to John Higgins and
The family moved west and in 1788 were living in Madison County Kentucky. About 1799-1800
they moved to a place on the Cumberland River called “Horseshoe Bend” and then to Adair
County, Kentucky, where Samuel became a minister. They were members of the Presbyterian
Church and later joined the Newlights.
In 1811 they moved to Indiana and selected land on Walnut Level near Jacksonburg, Wayne
County, Indiana, purchasing the land at the Land Sale of 12 Mile Purchase in October 1811.
He died 27 November 1835 in Wayne County (but the book does not say if this was near
Jacksonburg or some other place in Wayne County, Indiana.

seems that I did not copy the pages that listed their children, so I do not know – at
present –how many children they had.)
This family’s migration path is a little hard to follow from Bedford County, Virginia to
Wayne County Indiana, through Tennessee and Kentucky, as there is still quite a lot of
information that needs to be collected on all these ten children and their own families to
follow fully where this family lived.
If you are a member of any of these ten children, and their own families, I would like to
hear from you please, so that we can build this family branch further.
