That is the saddest thing I have read in a long time! How secure will
Nannie feel, considering what has happened to her in her nine years?
Sometimes "right" is wrong.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Description: Returned to Mother Despite Her Tears. Little Girl Cared
For by Mr. and Mrs. W. P. BOYD for Two Years.
Date: November 24 1909
Newspaper published in: Fort Worth, TX
Little Nannie DEWITT, the 9-year-old protege of Mr. and Mrs. W. P.
BOYD of 1007 Washington avenue, must go back to her mother and
stepfather, who live at Joaquin, Texas, at the decree of the Forty-
eighth district court. The mother appeared in Judge BUCK's court in
person Tuesday afternoon, and the habeas corpus proceedings, resulted
in her favor.
The little girl was given into Mrs. BOYD's charge by the mother over
two years ago, when Mrs. DEWITT, a widow with five children, found
herself too poor to support her numerous family. The little girl was
placed in school by the BOYD's and treated as one of the family.
Last spring, Mrs. DEWITT was married to P. J. WILLIAMS, an East Texas
farmer. It developed on a previous trial that she had seen WILLIAMS
only once before the wedding day.
Six weeks ago WILLIAMS came to Fort Worth and demanded possession of
the little girl. She did not wish to go back with her stepfather, and
protested so earnestly that Mrs. BOYD would not send her away.
WILLIAMS instituted habeas corpus proceedings, but Judge BUCK decided
that the little girl should remain with the BOYDs at least until the
present school term is over.
Tuesday afternoon, however, the mother of the little girl appeared,
and the court reversed its former decision.
On the stand the little girl testified that she loved Mr. and Mrs.
BOYD and did not want to go back to the East Texas farm. There were
tears in her eyes when the judge gave his decision, returning her to
her mother and step-father.
