Good morning / afternoon everyone,
I'm new to genealogy. I've been working for a couple of years, off and on, to trace my paternal lineage. Alas, I'm not the greatest at taking notes when it matters, and I failed to properly document my sources when I initially think I traced my lineage back to Scotland. Now I'm stuck trying to track further back than William Boyd [b. 1772 in NC, d. 1852 in Montgomery, AL].
Below is what I have confirmed, but I need guidance, since I am new and don't have access to many of the resources stuck behind paywalls. At one point I felt like I found promising information on WikiTree, but that's also where my excitement got the best of me and I failed to document things.
If someone has information on this paternal line (I'm also interested in the maternal side, but that will come later, but I assure you I will take anything related), I would greatly appreciate your guidance in pointing me back on the road and in the right direction.

Dear Boyd Listers,
I'm looking for assistance from those Boyd researchers who have done considerable research in Surry and Rowan Counties in North Carolina especially associated with our Boyd kin of these areas. I'm working through family associations in Bucks County that moved to North Carolina from Bucks County prior to the Revolutionary War.
My particular Boyd line is associated with Plumstead and Northampton Townships in Bucks County PA. My direct ancestor, William Boyd was born in 1753 in Plumstead Township and lived primarily in Northampton Township in Bucks County PA. William's father is either a John Boyd of Plumstead, who died in 1782 Bucks County, or a James Boyd of Northampton. It is beginning to look like his father is James Boyd, but I'm still building the case.
I've traced three individuals who were born in Bucks County PA to North Carolina and all served in the Revolutionary War. I believe all have a tangential relationships to the Bucks County Boyds and so I'm interested in whether Boyd Listers 1) have come across any of these names in your research and 2) how to best navigate land and probate records in aforementioned North Carolina counties, given my unfamiliarity in researching there.
- James Boyd, born 1763 in Bucks County PA, served in the Revolutionary War from Surry County, NC (which was formed from Rowan County in 1771) in place of his father, Joseph Boyd. He died in Patrick County, VA.
- Thomas Benson Jr, born 1755 Bucks County PA, moved from Bucks to Rowan in 1763, served in the Revolutionary War from Rowan County, NC under Charles McDowell. Thomas is the son of Thomas Benson Sr.
- Alexander Erwin was born 1750 in Bucks County, PA and served in the Revolutionary War from Rowan County NC under Charles McDowell. Alexander is supposedly the son of Nathaniel Erwin.
For the possible associations of these individuals to my Boyd lines in Bucks County. The 1763 James Boyd was the son of Joseph Boyd of Bucks County. In Bucks County, Joseph Boyd was sued by Jared Erwin for debt in 1766. This same Jared Erwin served as a surety for a case where John Boyd of Plumstead (died 1782 Bucks) and his wife Mary were involved in an assult case. I don't have direct evidence tying this Jared Erwin to either Alexander Erwin or Alexander's father Nathaniel, but I'm hoping to establish it.
In 1751, James Boyd (supposed father to my William and not the 1763 James Boyd, son of Joseph) served as a witness to the will of Henry Benson in Northampton Township, Bucks County PA. According to Henry's will, Henry was the son of Thomas Benson. Given the associated dates, this Thomas Benson is likely the grandfather of Thomas Benson Jr., who was born 1755.
An additional North Carolina connection is through a John Johnson who died in 1799 in either North Carolina or Bucks County, PA. His probate in Bucks County PA said he was late of Bucks County but indicated he had wheat somewhere in North Carolina and that there were funeral expenses paid in "North Carolina". John Johnson was the father-in-law of Elizabeth Edams, who in turn is the daughter of Hugh Edams. My ancestor, William Boyd, served in the Revolutionary War in place of Hugh Edams. I'm wondering if John Johnson owned land in either Surry or Rowan County, NC?
I welcome comments, suggestions, and research assistance in establishing stonger ties to these loose family associations.
