Page 184 of 'A History of St. Mark's Parish Culpeper Co., Virgnia,
with notes of Old Churches and Old Families and illustrations of the
Manners and Customs of the Olden Time.' by Rev Philip Slaughter,D.D.
states the following about Mary Fontaine:
4. Mary Fontaine m. first Bowles Armstead; issue, William, Elizabeth,
Mary and Peter; m. second John Lewis, a nephew of General Washngton;
issue, Frances, Howel and Mary Ann.
My question is. Does anyone have information about the baby Mary
Anne was pregnant with at the time of Bowles's death? The will of
Bowles mentions the same 4 children that are mentioned in the 'St.
Mark's article'. The 'St. Mark's article' names 3 children for John
and Mary Ann (Fontaine) Lewis. Is one of those 3 actually the baby
mentioned in Bowles Armistead's will?
My ggg-grandfather was Armistead B. Terrell, b. abt. 1810, VA. I am
trying to find his parents. Frances (?)Lewis/Armistead (mentioned
above) married Keeling Terrell.
I have sources (mostly William and Mary Quarterly articles) for all
of this information if anyone is interested.
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for your response. I do not want to subscribe to the Bowles
rootsweb mailing list at this time but you may post my query to it if
you want to. I'm not even sure if I am connected to the Bowles line
yet. I am already on several mailing lists and don't want to add
another right now. If you post it to Rootsweb, it will automatically
be posted on Ancestry.com
I found the following two websites while searching for my ancestor
(Armistead TERRILL) that contained the BOWLES surname. That is my
main source for information and I have no additional information
other than what is contained there. They both show the marriage of
Mary BOWLES and William ARMISTEAD. Unfortunately, they are both
lacking in the areas of dates, places and sources. I do know that
there is information about the ARMISTEAD family in an article(s) in
the William and Mary Quarterly Magazine (Series 1, Vol. 6,
1897-1898). On pg 170 it states that, "BOWLES ARMISTEAD, son of
William Armistead and Mary Bowles, was a student at William and Mary
College from 1763 to 1766. His will was proved in Culpeper county
July 21, 1785. He got all his father's land in Culpeper. He married
Mary Fontaine, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Winston Fontaine and
had issue: William Bowles Armistead, who died unmarried; Peter
Fontaine Armistead; Mary, married, first, C. Alexander; second W.C.
Selden; Elizabeth married Ludwell Lee; A daughter, married _______
Terrell (Virginia Historical Collections, Vol. V., Huguenot
Emigration, p. 146; Virginia Magazine, Hist. and Biog., Vol. III, p.
432; "St. Marks Parish" by P. Slaughter)
As I stated in my original query, Bowles's will named four children
and stated that his wife, Mary Anne, was pregnant. It is the child
that she was pregnant with that is of the most interest to me since
it may be the connection to Armistead TERRELL, my ggg-grandfather.
This next one is a little tricky to navigate so I will try to give
you the steps to get where you may be most interested.
Scroll down to 'Separate Trees'
Select: 'Some Descendants of Jean de la Fontaine'
Select: Surname list
When you get to the surname list, you will find the BOWLES and
FONTAINE surnames. There is one BOWLES and many FONTAINES. In the
FONTAINE name list, look for 'Mary Ann, b.1759, "Beaverdam" Hanover
Thanks for your interest. Feel free to post this information
wherever you think it may be useful to BOWLES researchers.
