Harriet HARLAN SNODDY
15 Jun 1814 – 10 Mar 1902
Mrs. Harriet SNODDY, widow of the late Cary A. SNODDY, was born in the year 1814 and
died March 10, 1902, and was consequently, at the time of her death in the eighty-eighth
year of her age. She was the daughter of the Rev. Barton HARLOW, a Methodist preacher of
this community, who was widely known a generation ago. She made a profession of religion
at a very early age and joined the Methodist church and was a faithful and consistent
member until her death. At the time of her marriage she went to live on the farm on
Brady’s creek on the Burksville road and resided there until about fifteen years ago, when
she went to live with her son-in-law, Rev. David BOWLES, the well-known circuit rider.
The latter part of her life was spent in Allensville, Ky.
Mrs. SNODDY was of a retiring disposition, but very firm in her convictions of what she
thought was right and proper, and she was usually endowed with the gift of common-sense.
Indeed, I am inclined to the opinion that I have never known anyone in whom that peculiar
trait was more highly developed. Always serene and quite, she moved along as evenly in
the midst of the most exciting and exasperating circumstances that will necessarily
surround the woman with a large family, is under the most ordinary and common-place
conditions.
Six children survive the mother, two sons and four daughters: John H. SNODDY, H. C.
SNODDY, Malinda LOWE, Annie Lee PEDEN, Ellennora BOWLES and Miss Clara SNODDY.
Farewell, aunt Harriet, all that is mortal of the is now mouldering back to the dust in
the beautiful Odd Fellows cemetery in Glasgow, Ky. But thy freed and unfettered spirit has
taken its flight to the region of eternal day.
S. G.
SNODDY
Marv’s Comments: The above obituary was taken from “Find A Grave”. They have her surname
as HARLOW (which I am sure is wrong). I have her as Harriet HARLAN and her father’s
tombstone has his surname as HARLAN. Harriet HARLAN SNODDY was the wife of Cary Allen
SNODDY who descended as follows:
John SNODDY and Agnes GLASGOW
James SNODDY and Frances WILKERSON
Samuel Wilkerson SNODDY and Sarah ALLEN
Cary Allen SNODDY and Harriet HARLAN
