Subject: [BOWLES] Aaron Bowles in NC
You might want to look at Orange Co. NC as the source of the family of your
Aaron Bowles/Boles. There was an Aaron Boles there in the early 1800s., too
early to be your Aaron but this may suggest a family link. Aaron is not a
common Bowles name, so there may be a connection.
I will copy some records below. This Aaron served as bondsman for several
marriages. He also left a will in Orange Co. in 1816, which indicated he had
a brother, John Boles.
There were several pockets of Bowles/Boles in Orange Co. in the late 1700s
and early 1800s. I don't think anyone has done a very good job of sorting out
those families. At least one family was clearly Scots-Irish Presbyterians.
They migrated south into northern NC from Pennsylvania.
You mentioned you had found somer Aarons in a chart for Chief Bowles of the
Cherokee tribe. In the part of Orange Co .where some of the Bowles lines were
found, there was an Indian settlement. While I'm not real familiar with
this settlement, I think the names Hicks and Jeffries (see the marriage below
for Betsy Jeffries) were associated with the settlement. This Orange Co. land
was, however, settled by the Saponi Indians, not the Cherokees. But, it may
be that as the tribes were pushed west and south, the Saponis and Cherokees
migrated together (Linne Gravestock -- can you add anything to this??)
I don't know how helpful this will be, but it does give you somewhere to
look in NC.
