Adrian Prince adds this to his posting:
"Bowles was the brother of William Colgate who founded the company
that became Colgate Palmolive. Bowles joined his brother at the
company shortly after it was founded. He was born on 14 Jan 1789 at
Filston Fm, Shoreham, Kent, married Lourina Townsend in Delhi NY on 8
Oct 1812 and died in New York on 20 Aug 1845.
His mother was Sarah Bowles (b c1759 in Staplehurst, Kent). She
married Robert Colgate in Staplehurst on 28 March 1780 and they
migrated (with Bowles) to USA on the Eliza to Baltimore in 1795.
Sarah's parents were John Bowles (b 1727 in Horsham, Sussex) and Ann
Bagnall. I've got more detailed information if required."

Subject: [TOWNSEND] Long Island Townsends
Lourina Townsend (b 1791) who married Bowles Colgate was my wife's
third gt grand mother. I did have a lineage back to the John
Townsend (b c 1620) who migrated to America from Norfolk. However,
I've now found some different lineages. Lourina's grand father was
clearly John Townsend (b 1743) but I've found two alternative
father's names for that John - either John (b c 1712) or Thomas (b c
1694). Anyone got any well researched information?
There's also some confusion about the migrant John's descendants.
Was Freelove Dickinson married to John's son Daniel (b 1663) or
John's grandson Daniel (b 1685) whose father was supposedly James (b
Most of my wife's early American ancestors were in New England which
has excellent online genealogical resources. Are there any good
resources for New York between 1640 and 1840 (apart from Ancestry)?
Thanks in advance
