"Uriah Bowles" listed below is probably Zachariel Boles born 1745 to John
and Ann Boles of New Kent Co, Va. Zachariel and his brother Thomas married
Martins. Zachariel and Thomas both lived in Chesterfield Co, Va. Zachariel
stated in 1826 that he had been living in Indiana for 30 to 32 years.
Martin, Charles A., and Zachariel Bowles are listed on the Knox Co, IN
voting list for 1807. Zachariel probably married Thomas Sturman's daughter
after Martin's mother died.

Subject: [BOWLES] Martin Boles, Knox Co., IN, 1809
This comes in from GenealogySix(a)aol.com:
Two Thomas Starman/Steerman estates probated.
Thomas's estate in Daviess Co, KY 1827 and now
Thomas' estate in Knox County, Indiana Territory 1809.
Recently I found another set of estate papers for Thomas
Starman/Sturman/Stearman. On the six documents, Starman is spelled,
Steerman, Stearman. Thomas Stearman died intestate and his estate was
Knox County in the Indiana Territory filed in Vincennes on 12 Jan 1809.
bond was given to Humphrey Steerman ( his signature), Martin Boles and John
F. Thompson. I believe the other two men might be son-in-laws of Thomas
Starman. Does anyone know of them? No wife was mentioned, so she was
My ancestor, who I think was his son was Thomas Stearman who died in 1827
in Daviess County, KY.
Has anyone researched Peggy Stearman and John Thompson?
Anyone know about Martin Boles? He didn't sign his name, signed with an X,
but John F. Thompson signed his name on the bond.
Subject: Re: [STEARMAN] Two estates of Thomas Starman/Sturman/Stearman
This is a huge breakthrough to find estate papers
for Thomas Sturman in 1809 in Knox County,
Information handed down in my family said that
"Uriah Bowles" and "John Thompson" were married
to two of Thomas Sturman's daughters. I've found
the marriage record for the Boles-Sturman
marriage but the Thompsons are harder to track.
There were so many John Thompsons.
Here's the information from an old handwritten chart:
Thomas STERMAN-----wife Elizabeth WALKER
Elizabeth married George French
Nancy married William Shepherd
Rebecca married 1-Isaac Hudson; 2- David French
Susan married Peter Boyd
Jane married Supply Butterfield
Peggy married John Thompson
Lavina married 1- Uriah Bowl es ? [the
handwriting wasn't clear on this name so what I
thought was "Uriah" must have been "Martin".
Levina Stearman married Martin Boles in 1799 in
Guilford Co, NC; then Lavinia Boals married James
Thompson in Knox Co, IN in 1813 ]; 2 ’Äì John
Humphrey [no spouse listed]
Thomas [no spouse listed]
My list says Thomas Sterman's wife was Elizabeth
Walker. Others have said his wife was Mary Lewis.
I can't find any marriage record so don't know
which to believe. Or maybe he was married twice?
My research had already confirmed the existence
of all the children on this list except for
Humphrey. The spouses shown for Thomas' children
also appear to be correct. Regarding the 2 sons
listed for Thomas Sterman - son Thomas is
probably the man who married Nancy Briant, but no
one else seemed to know about a son named
Humphrey. Other researchers of the George French
- Elizabeth Sturman family told me that
Elizabeth's father was "Thomas Humphrey Sturman"
so when I found Humphrey Sturman living in
Sullivan County near Nancy (Sturman) Shepherd in
the 1820 census, I thought this was Elizabeth's
and Nancy's father. But with estate papers
proving the death of Thomas Sturman in 1809,
Thomas must have actually had two sons as shown
on my list.
Humphrey Sturman is shown as 45 years or older in
1820 and his household includes a female of the
same age. There are no children in the household.
That would mean Humphrey was born in 1775 or
