Sandi Gorin has done a monumental job of
indexing the wills and forms recorded in the
Barren County, Kentucky Will Books from 1799
through 1990. The document itself is not typed
out in full; this is only an *index* to the wills
which have been recorded in Barren County.
What you'll see, if you write to Sandi
and ask for a copy of this index, are the
the date of probate or recording
the name of the deceased
the type of document (Sandi has used 8
abbreviations: e.g. widow's dower, sale of the
the book it's in

With Sandi's permission, I'm giving you
the enumeration of the Boles/Bowles ancestors'
names in this index. The time period ranges from
1888 to 1990. Generally---though not
strictly---the older documents are at the top
then proceeding through the years to the most
modern ones at the bottom.

If you get the index and then write to
Sandi to ask, "Is that will pertaining to John
James Boles or John Robert Boles?" she won't
know. She has the same index that you would
have---not the wills themselves.
Remember that it's not just the Boles and
Bowles ancestors who are listed in this index.
All the ancestors who filed a will in Barren Co.
are here, too.
I wish I'd had this index about 15 years
ago, when I was casting about for anything on
Benjamin Bowles and his wife, Elizabeth Jeffries.
After a great many letters and phone calls to
other people, it was Sandi who had seen the
records of Elizabeth's father, Daniel Jeffries,
who died in Barren Co. When I wrote to the
Barren Co. courthouse, they told me about the
large amount of papers Daniel's death generated.
When I received those documents, they showed that
Benjamin was appointed the guardian of Daniel's
children. Which indicated that Daniel and
Benjamin probably knew each other for some time
in order for Daniel to entrust his children to
Benjamin. Perhaps if I looked for Daniel
Jeffries in the states around Kentucky, I could
find his family. It turned out not to be that
hard. There he was, with his siblings, in
Stafford Co., VA.
This is one of the reasons that I keep
saying to our Bowles list members: Don't
concentrate only on your direct line ancestors.
Look for who they married and where those
ancestors came from. Look for their siblings,
and who the siblings married. Keep scrolling
through the microfilm and microfiche for who
their neighbors were---they were often relatives.
Ask who these folks traveled with. All this
information often gives you valuable clues that
you can follow up on.
So if you have ancestors who lived in or
migrated through Barren Co. this index might be a
valuable resource. There are many of the
surnames which we've looked at through the
years---Barton, Crenshaw, Dale, Eubank, Gill,
Hall, Holtzclaw, Lattimore, Logsdon, Pedigo,
Ritter, Shirley, Warder---and countless others.
If you do order this index from Sandi,
please respect her request not to put it on the
Internet or the Web. She's spent months going to
the courthouse and squinting at the handwriting
or typing, trying to decipher what many clerks
wrote years before. She deserves to earn a
living from her hard work that will make our work
so much easier!
Yours with best wishes,
