I've been lazy about posting since my brick wall is the same as many other
descendants of Gideon Bowles. Actually, with the number of lines I have
been working at one time, I'm pretty satisfied with getting back to Gideon.
However, Harry Sutcliffe has raised some interesting points concerning
Farquhar's lineage for Gideon. I have a copy of an article that Harry wrote
on the subject:

After seeing so many posts and getting good information I did a little
brainstorming the other night. I went into the above web site and started
looking for my missing surnames. Behold I found several that are fairly new
to this. I posted a query to them and I have now found my PERKINS Line and
part of my ROSE line. The PERKINS line ties into my BOWLES. Give it a shot.
It can't hurt and may help one and all.
I have 81 messages in my " Bowles Connection " folder. I know some
are duplicates, what ever the number is, it is a few more than expected.
I really wanted to see over half post, it could be a busy day, yet. I
believe most of us learned something and connections can go on for
months to come, you that sent yours in will benifit the most.
Couple things I wrote that need more research. I have read for years
that Mary Ship Bowles went to Barren Co, and she may have. If she
didn't, I don't know the Mary Bowles in the 1808 census is, and that is
what needs to be found out.
Second, the Gideon Bowles post most came from the Will, some dates
and marriage came from a CD and/or post. I am interested in the marriage
information. Some think VA and others CT, I think you know what is
needed to solve this, and if you have it please post it or if you have
any kind of information on this please post. I have always heard Jenny
and Jincy were for Virginia, can anyone help me on that.
I would like to do a couple more things starting next week. Those
being Marriages and Surnames. This should tell us more on where they
were at a given time and what group they were in. This can be a little
tricky, but may give you some information you had not thought of.
Let's just keep on doing what we are suppose to be doing. Posting.
Many, Many, Thanks

The only BOWLES/BOWLS I have is:
Ruth BOWLS b.c 1740 Goochland Co., VA. d.c1800 Fluvanna Co., VA
m. Benjamin A. Thacker, Sr.- July 1757 in Goochland
My line is Benjamin and Anna (Grubbs) Thacker, Jr.
I have nothing on her parents or siblings, a lot on the Thackers.
Thanks for any help.
There is a headstone in the cemetery at Springfield Christian Church,
Vontay, Hanover Co. VA for: Deoker BOWLES, b. 27 Feb 1851, d. 15 May
1924. There is another headstone for Deoker's wife: Annie Garland,
b. 21 Sep 1863, d. 24 Jul 1934.
Anybody want to guess that this is Diocan Bowles, son of Bolman H.
Bowles, who "...lives in Vontay, Hanover county, Va." according to page
239 of Farquhar's book?
Any comments or information on Deoker / Diocan will be greatly

Does anyone have a Boles marrying a Flora Hurt ca. 1870's. Possibly in
the Bedford, Va., area. I have a parallel Bowles/Boles connection
although not direct to Boles. According to my mother, the Boles and
Bowles in our family were not related that anyone knew of. My
grandfather Carcie Bowles knew Jerry Boles of Greeneville, TN, and I've
heard it said many times by my grandparents' generation that they were
not related although Jerry's daughter was my mother's (Mildred Elizabeth
Bowles) cousin, the degree to which I nor Mother has any idea. Flora
Hurt was my great grandmother Elizabeth Harmon's sister.
This comes in from our faithful scout, Wanda Tracy, who will
have no other information about these charts.

Sometime ago I posted this and doing so again for any newcomers.
Years ago a Dr. Hagler found an old diary in a desk at Canton, Missouri. This
diary was written by an Albert McKee and is supposedly in the library at
College in Quincy, Adams, Illinois. The following are some entries from the
diary, of which I have a full copy in my files.
Apr 9 Mild and pleasant day. Spent the day at home except visiting
Mr. Bowles. He was very sick.
Apr 30 Clear and windy and rather cool, stayed about home. Went to
Mr. Bowles in the evening.
Thurs May 4 Clear, warm and windy. I was sent for about six o'clock in the
to go to Mr. Bowles for he had shot himself with a rifle.
I went down
and found him lying upon the floor in his blood, alive,
easily and without any struggling. He lay like a man
asleep. It was
one of the most afflicting sights that I have ever beheld
to see as
kind a neighbor and a man of as much knowledge and sense
was, in such awful situation and then to witness the
distress of his
afflicted family was truly distressing. Mrs. Bowles was
parent, a good neighbor and a loving and tender husband
benevolent man. His house was always open for the
the weary traveller and his hand was never closed
against the wants
of the needy and oppressed; by his death the community
suffered a great loss an his death will long be felt in
the county and
vicinity. He shot himself about half past five in the
morning and died
May 5 Clear and windy, warm in forenoon and cool in the afternoon.
Attended the funeral of Mr. Bowles which was about 10
My husband and I went to Goochland County, Virginia today searching for
answers, as always, we just have more questions! We found info that we need
more info on to make it concrete. George Bowles married Susanna Lovell,
daughter of George Lovell, in 4June1806 in Goochland County, Allen Parrish
It also was in Goochland Marriage Record Book 1794-page 93. Is there anyone
that can help me on this couple? Dot Harris Burford dotb(a)adelphia.net.

"To Linne, Kathy, Jacque and all, I might have went a little overboard on
the pay plan & should not have sent the post. John did pay 110 lbs for
the first 200 ac in Barren Co, October 12 1807 to James Fishback. John
listed him self as being from Lincoln Co.....building Dripping
Springs Church. It makes sense they were paid in land. I know they
bought land once, but why buy land, back then if you are going to
move in a few years? O'well we will try to figure that out
Leathel, I don't want anyone to be afraid to put a theory out
on the table. We need all the creative brainstorming we can get
sometimes, to jog our minds into thinking of new ways to find
documents, or see census records...all kinds of things.
Whether your information that you posted is accurate or not
at this point, who cares? What matters is that you have an angle of
knowledge that I didn't have, with all this church construction and
moving around, and the possibility of looking at the situation in KY
in a new way. We can always track down any documents that might be
out there to see what accuracy looks like---later.
I for one am not going to fault you for your contribution.
In fact I applaud you for stepping out there, and I'm grateful.
Let's all welcome all kinds of ideas, possibilities and insights!

Thanks again, I have 9 for 7/28/99. Very,very good, I believe I am right
when I say the new people are out posting the old timers. I want to
thank Lisa for her post on John Fleming Bowles, my line. Haven't hear
from Dorothy or Ludema yet.
I thank Lisa had some extra information that I don't have. I'm going to
point out a couple place we different. This is what I have
1. On Anderson R. Bowles, I don't know what happen to Elizabeth, but
Anderson had remarried by 1850, sometime between Miram b. abt1847 and
Maria b. 1850. He married Nancy J. don't know last name, so that would
make Nancy J, Maria mother.

used a K for a C ). 2nd wife Fannie Gray, no third wife. If I find
anything else I will let you know.
3. I have the law suit against Anderson and Malinda on the computer
now, just got it done a couple weeks ago. It is about 15 pages long
probably more through email. I don't have it edit yet, don't need much
if any.I will send it to the List in parts if Linne says OK and enought
I am trying to find out information on my 2nd great-grandfather, Wm Harrison
Boles. Per the index on Familytreemaker.com, there is a Wm Harrison Boles
listed on the Family Pedigrees: Everton Publishers, 1500 -1990 (#15) CD.
Does anyone have this CD? I would be greatful if someone can look up this
information and let me know what's on it.

Welcome to the BOWLES mailing list!!
PLEASE SAVE THIS INFORMATION so you have it for future reference.
PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE of your fellow list members. Some folks are beginners at computers and some to genealogy. The world is a better place when we are all patient with each other. Personal attacks, criticism, or flaming are never permitted.
HOW DO YOU POST? Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
WHAT SHOULD YOU POST?
1. Questions about your ancestors. Give as much detail as you can.
2. Interesting history that is relevant to the list.
3. Genealogy and family history conferences, even if they charge for admission.
4. Genealogy societies should feel free to post about their society and their websites.
5. Book reviews of genealogy books are reasonable to post. A list of books is not, but sharing a good genealogy book you've found is a good idea.
6. Links to personal blogs that are about genealogy. They can be your blog or another. Even if the blog has ads, that is not a problem.
7. New collections on various genealogy sites that are relevant. We don't want advertisements, but if you find an interesting collection on Ancestry, FamilySearch, Library of Congress, or some other site that has relevance to the list, let people know.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR POST?
1. An informative but concise subject line.
2. When replying to a previous message, be sure to check that the intended recipient's address is showing in the Send To box of your email BEFORE clicking on SEND.
3. Proofread and be sure you want your post public. All posts go in the archives!
