Does anyone have good evidence that Bowes and Bowles, apart from
occasional misspellings, are the same surname ? The Queen Mother was
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon before she married, but in fifty years I have not
seen her maiden name associated with Bowles. Bowes is an established
Scottish Family. Perhaps someone can set me straight ?
Those interested in Bowles in England may be interested to know that
Bowles is a new listing in the GOONS ( Guild of One-Name Studies,) (
Since most of those we are interested in will be deceased, I wonder why
GONS wouldn't have been an adequate and probably more appropriate
abbreviation, but that's an idle thought. ) Goons is at Box G, 14
Charterhouse Buildings' Goswell Rd., London EC1M 7BA, England. Close by
or at the Society of Genealogists. This is from The English Researcher,

New burials in the White Cemetery, which I just sent to you...
Linda Hodges, one of our new subbers locally, has really done me a big
favor. She has gone through the Eva Coe Peden cemetery book which I
recently revised and combined from two volumes with a surname index to one
volume with a full name index. I was totally at the mercy of Eva's records
as I have no way of verifying much of the information contained therein.
For those of you who have purchased this book from me - or have a copy of
Eva's original two volumes - I will be posting additions and corrections as
located by Linda. There will be times that I will need your help as it is
obvious that Eva's records were wrong - but I have no way of verifying what
the correct info should be. If you can help at anytime, please jump in.

Wanda Tracy has done more of her combing through books for us, and
finishing up with the 40,000 Early Georgia Marriages. This is a heroic job
that she continues to do for us, especially since she has no interest in
the Bowles surname...this is simply done as a good-natured favor!
Let's hear three cheers for Wanda!

Here's the second installment on possible links to the NC Stokes Co. line.
The following will was written 30 April, 1780 in Surry Co. NC (which later
was divided to create Stokes Co.):
Benjamin Bowles Will Surry County, North CAROLINA
In the name of God Amen, I Benjamin BOWLES of Hanover County, Virginia,
being weak in body but of perfect memory, do make and constitute this my last
will and testament in manner and form following (to wit), I give my body to
the ground from whence it came, and my soul to God who gave it; As to what
worldly Estate the Lord has blessed me with I dispose of as follows.
Item I give and bequeath to my brother Thomas BOWLES five hundred acres
of land lying in Kentucky to him his heirs and assignees forever.
Item I give to my brother John BOWLES one thousand acres of land in
Kentucky, also a negro fellow named Louis to him, his heirs and assignees
Item I give to my sister Mary FORD five hundred acres of land lying in
Kentucky, also a negro boy named John to him and his heirs and assignees
Item I give to my sister Fanny BANNARD one negro wench named Silva to her
and her heirs and assignees forever.
I also give to my brother John BOWLES one hundred and twenty five acres
of land lying in Hanover County, Virginia, one black horse? and mare and
saddle to him his heirs and assignees forever, I also constitute and appoint
John BOWLES and Reuben FORD executors of this my last will and testament, in
witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th day of April in One
thousand and seven hundred and eighty.
Signed, sealed and acknowledged to this Last will and testament
in presence of:
William COOK Jurat
This will appears to tie together Bowles in three areas: 1) Surry/Stokes Co.
NC 2) Hanover Co. VA and 3) Kentucky. Since Kentucky did not become a
State until 1792, it is unclear to me exactly what is meant here by
"Kentucky." Does anyone have thoughts on this?
In going through my files, it appears that most researchers simply identify
this family with an "Unknown"progenitor. The following is taken from Marty
Grant's web site:
1 Unknown Bowles
2 Thomas Bowles b. abt 1745 d. may 1781 m. Sarah BURCH
2 Benjamin Bowles d. abt Aug 1780
2 John Bowles b. 1726/1766
2 Mary Bowles m. Reubin FORD
2 Fanny Bowles m._____ BARNARD
In a message posted 12/17/98 to the Bowles list, Ellen Byrne (dande(a)mail.net)
provides the following:
>>Following was sent to me in 1969 from Anna Ford, 412 E. 36th, Kansas City,
"In an old church in Middlesex Co. VA I found the baptisms of JOHN and MARY
BOWLES children. My ancestor was Reuben Ford, Baptist preacher, b. Hanover
Co. VA 1742 m. Mary Bowles, dau of John and Mary of Middlesex Co. VA. John
and Mary had:
1 Jerusha Bowles 20 Sept 1747/51
(I have to do a search on this one -- some body recently posted
a message saying Jerusha was in Surry Co. NC and giving her husband's
2 Thomas Bowles 17 Dec 1744
3 Fanny Bowles 27 March 1753 m. Joshua Bernard 30 June 1773
4 Mary Bowles m 6 Jan 1770 to Rev. Reuben Ford; she d. 13 Feb 1815
5 Lucy Bowles b. 4 Apr 1758
6 John Bowles
7 Benjamin Bowles of Hanover Co. VA, his will in Surry Co. NC 1780
brother Thomas, John, sister, Mary Ford.
I guess I have two questions for everyone:
1) Does anyone recognize this John and Mary Bowles from Middlesex Co. VA?
2) Does anyone have any information that might tie this family to the
line of William
Bowles who migrated through Frederick Co. VA and settled in Stokes
If you have anything that might be relevant, please post it to the list.
I'm new to the Bowles list and am looking for the antecedents of Henry P.
Bowles. He married Marry C, Pedigo March 7, l844 in Barren co, KY. He is
the father of my grandmother Cora P. Bowles Pedigo.
Pat Pedigo Perkins
Theresa Hutchins has forwarded me a copy of a newspaper article from The
Davie Co. Enterprise dated Friday April 19, 1940 that discusses the
Revolutionary War record of Benjamin Boles/Bowles of Montgomery Co. NC and
the monument that was erected in 1940 to recognize his service.
A descendent of Benjamin's, A. Lee Bowles of Davie Co. NC was apparently
responsible for applying to the War Department for the monument. It appears
that the information in the article was provided by A. Lee Bowles, and there
is one item in the article that is very significant. The article states:
"Mr Bowles (Benjamin) was in Captain Brevard's company during the
Revolutionary War and HAD A BROTHER IN THE SAME COMPANY."
If this statement is true (and I am assuming that A. Lee Bowles had
documentation), then this establishes Benjamin Bowles of Montgomery Co. as
brother of William Boles/Booles of Stoke Co. NC and who later married Sally
Bevin and migrated to GA.
Those of us researching Benjamin's family had already recognized the
similarity in the Revolutionary War service records of Benjamin and William.
They enlisted on the same day, both served in Brevard's company and were
discharged on the same day. We had not, however, been able to find any proof
of a relationship.
The following is from posts by Bev Boles (VSPY66A(a)prodigy.com) and Garrett
Bowles on the Stokes Co. line:
>>The Rowan/Stokes Co. line starts with William who went to Rowan Co. after
1756 and before 1767. There is a lease agreement between William and Robert
Eaton dated 24 Jan 1756 in Frederick Co. VA.
William was appointed a Constable of "The Town Fork" 15 Jan 1767 (from
minutes of Rowan Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Book 2, p. 677). In
1771 William Boles is listed with a poll tax for 3, indicating his two eldest
sons were over 16 and thus born before 1755. William had 4 sons and at least
one daughter. The wife of William is not known:
1 William Bowles (b. bef 1735; d. 1792, Stokes Co., NC) m. before 1750
2 John Bowles b. abt 1750 d. 1807 Stokes Co. NC
(Garrett Bowles has data on this line)
2 James Bowles b. abt 1754, d. 14 Jan 1828, Stokes Co. NC. m.
+ Mary (Molly) b. between 1765-1774
2 David Alexander Bowles b. abt 1756, Fredericks Co. VA m.
+ Sarah Moore b. abt 1764 Bucks Co. PA (dau of
(This line has apparently been well-researched)
2 William Bowles (Booles), Jr. b. 6 June 1752 d. 18 Dec
1817, Green Co. GA
m. 2 Nov 1772
+ Sally Biven Children identified in pension
(I believe more children have been identified)
2 Unk daughter who had children in 1776.
If the 1940 Davie Co. article is correct, then added to this list of children
2 Benjamin Bowles, b. abt 1764. d. abt 1843, Montgomery Co. NC
3 John Bowles
3 Henry Bowles
3 Jesse Bowles
3 William Bowles
3 Stacy Bowles
3 Lucy Bowles m. Unk. Bennett
I am going to NC next month and am hoping to do some digging to find the
documentation that connects Benjamin and William. It appears that A. Lee
Bowles did considerable research on Benjamin's line and I am hoping his work
can be traced in Davie Co.
I seem to recall that someone sent a post to the list recently identifying
the name of the father of William Bowles who d. 1792 in Stokes Co. as a John
Bowles. Does anyone else recall this? I have gone through my folders and
can't find this message. Maybe I dreamed it.
There is another Surry/Stokes Co. connection that could extend these links to
other Virginia and Kentucky lines. I am going to draft up another message
containing information on the data and will post it as soon as possible.
The Davie Co. article also states "The family came from Ireland, then to
Pennsylvania, and thnce to North Carolina." The next step in this process
will be tracing William Bowles and whatever additional family might have been
traveling with him back to Pennsylvania.
If anyone else can add to this data, please post it to the list.

Sarah T. Bowles should be Sarah P. Bowles, now count the children and
tell me why Mary is claiming a smaller number of children when they are
all hers ? You would be missing some if you used the law suit only to
verify. I believe this has happened in many cases. You use what you got,
which sometimes is not enough. Well, what happened here is (maybe some
died)they sold their part to Claibourne and moved on. You can thank
Jerry for this.

James Mullins & Claiborn Bowles }
All of Bedford County. William B. Cooper and wife Sarah P. formerly
Sarah P. Bowles and Francis M. Miller and wife Amanda formerly Amanda B.
Bowles, states that Joseph Palmer died many years ago in VA., after
making and publishing a Will and Testment. Among other bequeaths, one
was in which he loaned his daughter Mary, certain negro slaves during
her natural life and at her death to belong to her children. The negroes
went into possession of Mary bowles who was the wife of Claiborn
Bowles. When they and their increase continued until Mary bowles
departed this life intestate some two or three years ago, ahen negroes
became the property of the children of Mary Bowles. Mary Bowles left as
her children, Sarah P. and Amanda B., J.F. Bowles, Claiborn Bowles,
Elvira Lee wife of James Lee, and___Tolbert wife of T. Tolbert. Claiborn
Bowles was admr of estate of Mary Bowles. He hired out some of the
negroes for a number of years and failed to accounty with Sarah P. or
Amanda B. for their share of said hire. Orator states on about 1st April
or May 1849, the slaves disappeared from Bedford County, where he knew
not where, probably Alabama. James Mullins on 31st day of May 1849
executed a new bill of sale from Sarah P. and Amanda B.. Mullins stated
the slaves to be found in Jackson County, Alabama.
Answer of Claiborne W. Bowles: Mary Bowles died in 1846.
This is a update on the Bedford Co,TN. Bowles's that Jerry and I, and
others are working on.Jerry sent me his files he has from the Courthouse
in Bedford. I'm going to post three of those files after this post and
let you see what you can find out, you might see something I didn't.
What it looks like to me is that Claibourne Bowles of Bedford Co,TN. is
not the Claibourne Bowles of Barren Co,KY, but maybe 1st cousins.
Claibourne of Barren Co, son John Fleming died in 1838 in Barren Co, and
Claibourne of Bedford Co, son John F.W. was still living in 1850.
Jerry, sometime ago wrote of finding a Claibourne Bowles, one month old
in Buckingham Co,Va in the 1790 census(August census). This is the same
County that Mary Palmore is from that married this Claibourne Bowles of
Bedford Co.TN., but she was married before she married Claibourne to a
Haithcoat and had a son named William Haithcoat in 1809-1810.
Claibourne and Mary had a son Claibourne born 1820 in MS, this is the
Claibourne that married Malinda Lee and the Administrator for both
Claibourne Sr. and his mother Mary (Palmore) Bowles.
note: I don't know if this is the Claibourne from Buckingham Co. or not

the query is 1.3.1.
"My mother was Lillis Delatha BOWLES, b. 1885, Newton, AL; m. 1909
my father, Rev. Charles Erwin RAWLS of Kynesville, FL.
"My grandfather was Willis (or William) BOWLES of Sink Creek, FL.
Born in Calhoun Co. and m. my grandmother in Marianna, FL. Her name was
Virginia Jane WELCH, b. 1865 at Euphalia, AL. He was a dancer with The
Rose Killin Travelling Show and danced at Dothan, Newton and other places
in AL and FL. His ancestry was Cherokee-Creek and English blood, being a
direct descendant of William Augustus BOWLES who is in the history books of
Florida. Bible Records lists my grandfather as Willis Simeon BOWLES and he
was called Sim BOWLES most of his life. His brother was Monroe BOWLES.
"I need help with my g-grandfather's name, believed to be William
BOWLES also. He m. Robie (or Roxie) Ann MERCER. Both were b. in GA. His
birthplace was Macon, GA. His occupation was a carpenter at Columbus, GA.
When he died from an accidental fall off a roof, the two boys were
separated. Monroe was reared by an uncle in TX and Sim by an uncle in FL.
I would love to correspond with any descendants of this line of BOWLES
anywhere and exchange family history.
"Need help identifying Grandfather WELCH. My grandmother, Virginia
Jane WELCH (BOWLES), had brothers named Johnny and Adam WELCH and three of
her sisters were: Tinsey WELCH (HENDERSON, Mrs. John B.); Martha WELCH
(BOOTH---she m. a Dr. BOOTH, M.D.); and Emily Rebecca WELCH (BAKER), known
as Neddie, of Kynesville, FL. There were 20 WELCH children of whom 2 were
adopted. Would love to correspond with anyone on this line of WELCH.
"Need to learn my grandfather G. MERCER's full name and who his
parents were. Would welcome any help I can get with this line of MERCER."
