I want to underline my steering you to Ancestry right now.
For those who missed the notice: from 26 Dec., and for 30 days
from that date, they are offering a free search of all their databases.
This may not come again; I haven't seen this kind of offer before. Usually
it's one or two databases, free for 10 days.
The reason I'm so pushy about it this time is that they have a
service called PERSI, or the Periodical Source Index Bibliography. You can
pay for this service via other routes, or spend a lot of time in a very
large library, and you might be able to find it via other routes that I
don't know about. But here we can do a PERSI search in the comfort and
convenience of our own homes.
I've seen it said that if a professional genealogist neglects to do
a PERSI search, they can be considered sloppy and very lacking in their
research abilities. I've never had access to a PERSI search before, but I
can now see why someone would say that.
I went to the Periodical Source Index Bibliography section, and
typed in "Bowles". I got 92 references. I haven't made it through all of
them yet, but among the first 30, there was one on the Bowles/Bowen/Wilcox
family in Texas---that's my gang! This was in a tiny periodical that has
since stopped publishing, down near Galveston. Now it's my assignment to
find a copy of this, and it's listed in only one library holding, in the
Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
I see lots and lots of interesting articles and references, to
families that we've talked about in our group.
Paula, there's an article on the Boales in Christian Co., KY.
Sunny and Jane, there are references to IL Bowles/Boles families.
For the orphan researchers among us, pass the word: there are
articles on NY, MA, NH Boles/Bolles.
There seem to be enough here to make all of us happy. Write to
your correspondents and tell them about this opportunity. It could lead to
some genuine breakthroughs!
Happy New Year,
These notes have been forwarded to me by our intrepid Bowles
spotter, Wanda Tracy. Neither she nor I will have any more information on
these folks. Judging from the dates and places, I would hazard a guess
that this group is probably related to the Williams family group that I
posted to the Bowles list on 30 Nov. 98.

Happy hunting! Oh! Have a great and safe New Year, too!
I don't usually advise folks to check out a commercial site; it's
going to cost you money, and some of us are on very restricted budgets.
But Ancestry is giving us all a chance to noodle around in their
files and databases for 30 days...an offer I haven't seen them make before.
They have an *enormous* amount of information, such as land records
and tax records and censuses and pensions. Usually they ask that you pay
in order to have access to their information, but this time it's free. (An
exception to this is when they have 30 day specials on a specific database,
such as access to Social Security pensions, or Missouri land records, etc.)
I read this in a note that was posted on the 26th of December, so I don't
know how long the 30 days lasts. I do know that the clock is ticking away,
and that this isn't a chance to be missed!
This is a grand database for all surnames, so don't just focus on

I found your name as a researcher of the Bowles family in genforum.com. My
husband descends from a David Bowles born about 1783 in Virginia (that
birthdate is based on what he reported in the 1810 census, Franklin County,
VA). I keep running up against the possibility that he was the son of
Jesse Bowles and Hannah Perkins of Goochland, Virginia. I know they had a
son born in 1775/6 named David. In your family records, do you have any
more about your David that might indicate that he is the same as ours or
make that definitely not so? Our David had a daughter, Sarah, that was
born in 1798, based on census dates. He had a marriage recorded with
Elizabeth Clowers 20 May 1803, possibly a second marriage. Our David died
in April, 1829 in Greene County, Tennessee. Thanks for any help you can
give me. I keep running up against blank walls with this one. Katie

WHAT SHOULD YOU POST?
1. Questions about your ancestors. Give as much detail as you can.
