Is there an interest among the group in determining who Gideon Bowles,
1728-99 was? Most genealogies of the Bowles family appear to accept
without question Thomas M. Farquhar's 1907"History of the Bowles Family",
and his account of Gideon's background. This researcher has his doubts
about many of the assertions in the History, and is prepared to put
together a case to amend the Farquhar account, and hopefully replace the
refuted data. If such a Digest discussion is of interest, please let me
know and we'll move on it. I should add that the objective would be the
real story rather than ancestral glory. Harry harsut(a)juno.com
I see a possible connection to a relative I have had little luck tracing in
20-Susan Adeline Bowles & David Jennings that you mention in your message
below, but am wondering if you or another kind soul can tell me if I'm
pointing in the right direction! My Sarah "Sally" Jennings Boles was born
on 12 Mar. 1843 in what I believe is now Lee county VA, m. James S. Wilson
on 19 Jun 1870 in Bell county KY, and died in Bell county KY. She was
James's second wife and her mother was a Jennings from the Lee county VA
area. Could she be connected to your Bowles? Thanks in advance for your

Otho took the Bowles name, eventhough he was the illegitimate son of "Bet".
He resided in Roseville, IL, but we know nothing more of him.

If you have Hughs Bowles and Mary Ship in your line, you are in Gideon's
(c1728-1798) line. Son Anderson and Jane Mallory moved to Madison Co KY.
Son Caleb married Elizabeth Glen there in 1807, and the family moved on
to Fenton, MO, where they settled c1811. They had dau. Jane ( Jintz) b.
1819, but I have her marrying Samuel Vandover. A dau. of Anderson's,
Sarah Married Stephen Maddox, in St Louis, I think, They had 15 children,
incl Jane, who married a Huckstep. This is sketchy, because it's past
midnight, but holler if any of this rings a bell, and we'll dig deeper.

Good Hunting ! Harry
Hi, Here I am again, trying to find someone in the Bowles list that has my
ggggrandmother in their list. She is JANE BOWLES, b. early 1807 I believe
from indications in KY., possibly in Madison Co. KY. She married ROBERT
SHANKS 13 Aug 1828 in ESTILL CO. KY. The bondsman was WILLIAM A. BOWLES.
I find nothing anywhere on her, yet I know she existed, please check and
see if their was a Jane in your family tree. The closest I can come is
that she was the youngest child of HUGHES BOWLES AND MARY SHIPP. Does
anyone have any other information?
Would there be anyone out there
that would know how or where I could
get a list of the Plantations in Virginia.
Since all of my family has first names
such as: Nathaniel William, Elizabeth,
Samuel and of course the surname
being Bowles, I would guess that there
owners had to have the same last
name. Any help would be appreciated.
Also where would I look to find marriage
records for Blacks married sometime in
the late 1800's.
Doreen(lost and confused)
I am the one that originally asked the question as to where the Lebanon,
Bowles cemetery was. I probably was not very clear, I meant, Missouri.
Though, recently, someone posted my answer. I should have known that. I have
been there, but, I was very young. Ellen, also, shared some materials with me
that I remember reading about it, but, somehow it had escaped me.
Thank-you all, for your interest and help.
Hi, I tried really hard to figure this one out on my own, but is the
your referring to, in Ohio or Kentucky? They both have a Lebanon.
Sorry for coming in on the tail end of this conversation. Thank you,

Someone was asking about Tobias Bowles of MD.
English Adventurers and Emigrants, 1661-1733 lists:
Tobias Bowles of Botolph Lane, London, Merchant. Owned ship "Tobias", 300
Tons, Potoxan River, MD.1717 Problems with Crew.
I have a record, which I can't find at the moment, of a marriage of a
Tobias Bowles, Merchant in Charleston SC. Let me know if this record is
important to you. Harry
Carole wrote about the location. I have been there but as she said it is
described in the booklet I mimeographed 30 years ago. I picked up a couple of
little red rocks when I was there a few years ago and still carry them around.
I think Ardith Montelius who is a descendants of Robert Bolles and some of the
people have cleaned it up some and perhaps put up new stones. Ardith lives in
Santa Fe Springs, Ca. is Treasurer of the Bolles Family Assn and she and her
husband are actually from Lebanon. Ellen, dande(a)mail.tds.net
I can't remember when (or who) someone asked where the Bolles Cemetery is
I am pretty sure Ellen Byrne probably answered the question, since the
answer is in her book. However, just in case...........

Welcome to the BOWLES mailing list!!
PLEASE SAVE THIS INFORMATION so you have it for future reference.
PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE of your fellow list members. Some folks are beginners at computers and some to genealogy. The world is a better place when we are all patient with each other. Personal attacks, criticism, or flaming are never permitted.
HOW DO YOU POST? Send an email to email@example.com
WHAT SHOULD YOU POST?
1. Questions about your ancestors. Give as much detail as you can.
2. Interesting history that is relevant to the list.
3. Genealogy and family history conferences, even if they charge for admission.
4. Genealogy societies should feel free to post about their society and their websites.
5. Book reviews of genealogy books are reasonable to post. A list of books is not, but sharing a good genealogy book you've found is a good idea.
6. Links to personal blogs that are about genealogy. They can be your blog or another. Even if the blog has ads, that is not a problem.
7. New collections on various genealogy sites that are relevant. We don't want advertisements, but if you find an interesting collection on Ancestry, FamilySearch, Library of Congress, or some other site that has relevance to the list, let people know.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR POST?
1. An informative but concise subject line.
2. When replying to a previous message, be sure to check that the intended recipient's address is showing in the Send To box of your email BEFORE clicking on SEND.
3. Proofread and be sure you want your post public. All posts go in the archives!
