I hope someone can help. One of my ancestors is causing me a little trouble. All I know about him is his name
(John Smith this may be one of the problems!
), that he was that married to Miriam Green and that they had a son called Herbert Samuel in 1880. When the Sun was born, they were living in the cavalry barracks in New Windsor , Berkshire and at the time John was a trooper in the Lifeguards. I can't find his marriage certificate or any mention of him in the census returns of any year. I thought I might be able to find some kind of army record that would indicate where and when he was born, not to mention if he was involved in any military action. I have tried to look, but really don't have much of an idea of what I'm doing or even where is best to look.
Can any of you give me some pointers as to where and how to look?
Thanks in advance,
