Hi Judy, Like you, I'm almost afraid to say anything but, since Friday,
things have been workable again. I'm also using jaws 17 and IE11. I guess,
maybe, familysearch was working on their site or something. I'm very glad to
have it back again! Karen
I am almost afraid to get excited -- but -- today with JAWS 17 and Internet
Explorer 11, I am able to read the Results pages on Family Search!
Are others getting results read, as well?
Holding my breath that it stays true!

I had trouble on my laptop because the internet explorer was out of date.
When I tried it with my wife's desktop I had the same trouble as you. My son
said the results were on the screen, but JAWS just wouldn't read any of it.
I don't have an account either. When I've tried to set one up it requires an
image capture, without an audio option. If you find a solution, please let
me know too!
JAWS 17 should read the website ok whether or not it is professional or
home. On the other hand, I've been having some trouble with the same
website, only my problem is caused by my internet explorer being out of
date. I tried my wife's desktop recently instead of my laptop. It allowed me
onto the site and ran a search, but refused to read the results page. My son
looked and said it was on the screen, but JAWS wasn't reading any of it. If
you find a solution, please tell me too!
Hi Judy, I have always had the home version of jaws and this just started
about a month or two ago. I figured that familysearch had changed their
site so, I'd thought maybe installing my jaws 17 would help but, no such
Like you, I tried going back to a previous jaws version and that didn't
help. It's very frustrating as I've gotten lots of good information from
the site. Hopefully, things will improve. If nothing else, it's nice to know
I'm not alone! Karen
I do have a free membership with Family Search website, and it doesn't seem
to make a difference whether I am logged in or just running as a guest.
Either way, the results page, as you are also experiencing, loads but does
not let us use JAWS in any keystroke method I know. The results material is
there as usual, as I have had sighted hubby check for me. But we lost our
Did you by chance switch your JAWS software maintenance agreement from
Professional over to their new less expensive Home Edition? I still wonder
if there is a difference between the two.
I also tried loading JAWS 16, to see if that would do anything for the
result page. It did not. I tried downloading NVDA to see if switching over
to that screen reader would solve my problem - and that experiment was too
bothersome to finish.
I see that Family Search does have "Family Search Missionaries" that have
worked on JAWS access issues in the past.
Perhaps I need to:
- contact Freedom Scientific via telephone and see what they know
- go to my local Mormon family history research center and take my laptop
So they can see the problem
Thanks for anyone else's ideas and suggestions!

I am a new list user, Judy.
I am having trouble with JAWS and aFamily Search website.
I believe once my JAWS 17 rolled from professional version to the new Home
version, the family search results page stopped talking. The search page is
still functioning as normal. Perhaps family search did something new?? But
oddly mine stopped speaking on the results page the exact same day FS pushed
the JAWS 17 updates from my past Professional version to the new Home
Version. I will happily return my JAWS SMA to Professional and forget saving
the $80. Per each 2 years to get my familysearch.org back functioning
I am using Internet explorer.
Is any one else experiencing a similar downgrade in family search results?

Hi everyone, Is it just me or are there major problems with using the
familysearch website with jaws? I have win 7, jaws 17, and use internet
explorer 11. I can put my names into the form fields but, the results won't
ever show up.
Eventually, I get a screen telling me the results are there, but there's no
way I can read them. I've tried everything I can think of.
I do not have an account with familysearch as I don't plan to put my
research online. Do you think that would make a difference? Thanks for any
suggestions. Karen near Chicago, USA
