My gf, Francis Henry DENNIS, was born in Monmouth
(11/07/1873). His BC gives "Llanvrechva Upper" under "Where
Born" and the informant is shown as "Mary Jones, Occupier,
Llanvrechva Upper".
Would SKS please tell me:
What sort of place was Llanvrechva Upper?
Is it still standing?
Am I on the right mailing list?
Anything relevant would be much appreciated.
TIA
Les Dennis
(No. Not that one).
Les,
Llanvrechva Upper is not a building - it is one of the two parts of
the parish of Llanvrechva (the other being Llanvrechva Lower).
On a modern day map it is the area just to the north of Cwmbran, between
Griffithstown and Pontnewydd.
Try and locate a copy of "A History of Monmouthshire" by Sir Joseph Bradney
- Vol 3, part 2 (The hundred of Usk) as pages 285 to 291 give quite a lot
of information about the parish.
The 1881 census shows Llanvrechva Upper with a population of 3,282 and
Lower as 2,073.
The same census shows your DENNIS family in Plumstead, Kent (father
Alonzo?). They seemed to have moved around a bit.
