Well I asked my dad about Jared Edwards He said he remembered the name
but couldn't remember where the shop was located. I then asked my
daughter-in-laws father... He popped in to see dad - He also remembered
the name but couldn't remember...
My husband then asked me what I was looking for and when I told him he
said "they used to be in Maindee, opposite the police station, then they
changed their name to Jareds and moved onto the leeway industrial
estate." needless to say I was able to find it in the 1960 Kelly's and
then confirm it with dad who said oh yes I used to go past there every
day.
He also remembers going into Meesons at 131 Commercial Street when he
and a friend used to walk to the docks on a Sunday. I queried the sunday
opening and he said oh yes but they weren't christians as if that
explained everything. He then explained that they were apparently a
jewish family and therefore were closed on Saturdays.
Thanks to Tina my dad has spend a gloriuos few hours remembering pre-war
Newport - and telling me about it I grabbed the cassette recorder and
have spent the last hour or so typing up all his stories. He really was
a bit of a lad when he was young.
Thanks again
