A group of miners from Abertillery and Cwmtillery walked all the way
to the
Notts coalfields looking for work. This was in 1923. East Kirkby is a ward
of Kirkby in Ashfield ( which is named in the Domesday book). The pit
community was tagged onto East Kirkby. There was and still is just 5 streets,
starting with David, Mary, Edward and Alexander Street and running of Alexander
Street - Marlborough Road. The Pit was known locally as the Summit - the
community was also known by this name. I grew up on Mary Street. My mother still
lives there.
Hi Tricia,
what a small world! I was born on
Marlborough Road, and now live just a hundred yards from there, and knew most of the
Williams that lived in the Summit.
My dad was one of those that walked all the way to Kirkby from Abertillery
and my grandad too they were set on at the pit, and allocated a house on
Marlborough Road then they sent for their families, that comprised of my
mother and five children, my grandma Morgan and four grown up children plus their
families, so one whole branch of the Morgan's disappeared from Sth Wales.
You must agree the summit area was a lovely close community, although I
remember that some of the more affluent residents of Kirkby looked down on us
'summiters' could it be the rumpus we made when the miners institute turned
out on Saturday night? :>)
A few years ago with some help from the few
Welsh people left in Kirkby,
names of the some of the men who came to Notts from the
Abertillery area.
By the way my dad played rugby for the Abertillery Wanderers, but his first
love was billiards, he once played the world champion Joe Davies (or was it
Joe's brother?)
In 1946 as consequence of an accident some years earlier at
the Summit Pit
my
dad died at the age of 45. I lived on Marlborough Rd until my
marriage and
my mother lived in the same house until she died in 1978
(it was the first one after the opening that led to the welfare football and
cricket ground)
Did you belong to the same family as Ginna Williams? or Sylvia Williams
Are you living in Abertillery?
Thanks for answering my email, I look forward to hearing from you
