Dear List,
My ancestors John Martin DEAN and Margaret DAVIES were married in Llanhilleth in 1860.
Margaret was a spinster of full age and her father is named as Edmund DAVIES, clockmaker.
Recent work has established that Edmund was not a clockmaker in his own right and so must
have worked for a commercial clockmaker in some sort of subordinate capacity. The
Monmouthshire 1861 census is incomplete and Margaret died before 1871 so I do not know
where she was born. She and her husband lived in Ebbw Vale where their daughter Margaret
was born in 1863 so it would appear that she was born in that area. I am therefore looking
for a Margaret DAVIES in the 1851 census of Monmouthshire who is shown to be the daughter
of an Edmund DAVIES whose occupation could fit in with the clockmaking business. Any
suggestions?
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans
